ADSL Modems

If you get an ADSL modem based upon a Conexant chipset, you can get to the advanced dialog by pressing ALT-P. Select 'protocol setup'. Change VCI setting from 35 to 38.

Animated Gifs

To create an animated gif from a collection of still pictures:
First convert the pictures to the size you want and save them as .gif files.
Use something like Irfanview for that.
Then run UnFREEz and drag the pictures (in order) into it.
Set the delay between switches (in 100ths of a second. ie 400 = 4 secs)
Save it.
There, it's that easy !

Setting up Build3 Computer

Windows XP Setup:

Change drive letters
Create common data folders
Install motherboard drivers from CD
Install GWUM, GMT, Easytune4 (ET4), Acrobat Reader
Setup Easytune4
Copy Downloaded Apps & Downloaded XP Updates from my machine
Move MyDocuments
Change folder view
Install Nero from CD
Install InCD, Uninstall it with add/remove program, Reboot, Install InCD v4.0.5.6
Install PowerDVD
Should install Java here !
Install OpenOffice from Sep 2003 PCW DVD
Will need to enable Java after installing it !
Install keyboard driver for PS/2 19e
Install RAID drivers after enabling disk3 (use 2K_XP)

Extensible Operating System Loader (XOSL)

This is an alternative to RPM, which can include RPM, for booting.
However, it restricts the number of partitions and I find RPM easier on its own.
The only loss is that you can't boot from anything but the first master disk.
If you have operating system backups on another disk, and the first disk dies, then you can
just recable the good disk as the master, and carry on.
I do not recommend the use of XOSL at present.

Installing XOSL

XOSL only allows 4x primary partitions per disk. Since RPM allows 31x XOSL
seems rather a restricting option. XOSL would allow booting from a disk other than the
first.

Create a bootable floppy

Right-click Floppy A: in XP
Click “Create an MSDOS startup disk”

UnzipD:\Download Apps\XOSL\xosl115.zip to D:\Apps\XOSL
Copy all files in D:\Apps\XOSL\xosl to a:
Boot from RPM floppy
Run latest RPM (currently RPM244)
Create a DRDOS partition
Create a windows XP partition
Boot from XOSL floppy
Run install.exe
Install to DOS drive (the DRDOS partition)
Select Smart boot manager = no & 800x600
Reboot

Changing the partitioning in XOSL

In XOSL type ctrl-p, which will take you to RPM.
Use RPM as usual, and esc when finished.
That will take you back to XOSL.

To boot from partitions on disk2 (HDD1)

In XOSL setup

Tick 'swap disk' on disk2 XP partitions
Tick 'fix FAT drive number' on disk2 DOS partitions

To boot from partition on disk2:

Tick 'Disable' on all disk 1 partitions

File Format Conversion

If you've got files on an Archimedes and you want them on a PC, these things may be useful.

Google of “pipedream file format”

Installing DRDOS7.03 into a partition

First download ~6Mbytes of DRDOS Lite 7.03 from www.undercoverdesign.com
Run the resulting file, DRDOS703.exe which unpacks itself.
In a DOS window:

1) Put floppy 1 in and diskcopy disk01.144 a: (click ignore on 'other program
using device')
2) Put floppy 2 in and diskcopy disk02.144 a:
3) Put floppy 3 in and diskcopy disk03.144 a:
4) Put floppy 4 in and diskcopy disk04.144 a:
5) Put floppy 5 in and diskcopy disk05.144 a:

Enter RPM with '0' at bootup menu:
Define a partition at the top of the disk with type 0x04 = FAT-16 (<32 Mb).
I suggest a partition of about 100MB.
I think it may have to be in the first 8Gb of the disk.
Unmark all but that partition which should be marked 1 & '>' for the boot partition.
Boot from floppy 1 and install DRDOS following instructions.

Creating Linux Installation CDs

Linux installation files are usually supplied as ISO images that have to be written
to CD properly in order to recreate the original.
Mandrake is on DVD at:

R:\software\mandrake

Red HAT is on DVD at:

R:\software\redhat

Knoppix is on DVD at:

R:\Software\Hands On\\KNOPPIX_v3.2-2003-07-26-EN.iso

Don't just write the file as a data file.
It doesn't work ! Instead do the following:
1) Put a blank CD-R in the CD-RW and go into Nero.
2) Close the wizard.
3) Select File.Burn image.Image Files (*.NRG)
4) Select 'All files'
5) Choose the .ISO file
6) Make sure you have:

a) Data mode 1
b) Block size: 2048
c) Image header: 0
d) Image trailer: 0
Checkboxes: Unactive

7) Click OK
8) Select 'Write & finalise active'
9) Select 'write'

Installing Red Hat Linux

The non-obvious points are:

1) Use ext3 partition type. (I think this is wrong – it should be ext2 ??)
Select “Format partition” & set mount point to '\'1
2) Leave \dev\hda2 unticked for grub.
3) Create a boot floppy.
4) Reinstate RPM at the end.

Easytune4

If Easytune4 is installed this must be done to ensure that the northbridge fan stays on.
So you have 2 options. Don't install it or do the following !
Run easytune4 and click on 'S'.

Change the defaults to:

CPU RPM = 1900 (it should always be > 2000)
System RPM = 0
Power RPM = 1600 (PSU always above this)
CPU temp = 50 deg C if BIOS F2, 66 deg C if BIOS F7 (max temp for chip = 85 deg C)
System temp = 50 deg C if BIOS F2, 55 deg C if BIOS F7
Click on 'save'.

Note: The system & power fans are backwards to what's on the mobo, so you may.may
not need to swap these number over !

Click on 'smart-fan' and:

Click 'on'
Set fans on to 04:00
Set fans off to 03:59
Click 'ok'

In theory this limits the fans to being off for 1x minute at 4 in the morning !

Roll on an update to BIOS/easytune4 !

Click on 'alert' and:

Click on 'buzzer'
Click 'on.
Click 'save'

Music On-line

If stations like RedFM stop working, search for all .asf files, and delete them.

Testing Maxtor Drives

Test the drive after installation with a program from Maxtor called Powermax.
Unfortunately this gives false errors.
Notably: xxxS57 where xxx = first 3x chars of serial number.
Yet to be sorted.
The 6x digit error code which denotes a drive that needs replacing should be unique to the drive.
The first 3x digits derive from the serial number and the last 3x digits are the error code.

I've found a program that will enable me to control your computer from here.
But, to be able to do that you will have to install the software on your computer.
So please follow the instructions that follow.

These are the instructions for getting it onto your computer:

The password is: xxxxxxxxxx

Noisy Fans

To tell which fan is causing the noise, use a kitchen roll inner (or like tube).
One end to ear - other end near fan !

The most likely culprit is the north bridge fan. That's the small one below the CPU fan, with 8x on it.
The next possibility is the PSU daughter board fan.
I doubt the nice quality orange fans would be making noise other than moving air noise.

To cure it:

With power off.
Ground yourself to case first (static !!!)

REMEMBER WHICH WAY ROUND IT GOES
Remove fan carefully, by undoing the 4x screws.

REMEMBER WHICH WAY ROUND IT GOES
Carefully pull the plug out of the socket (red and black wires).
Use long nose pliers, don't pull the wires.

Take off the label on the inner face, covering the bearing.
Using a small screwdriver tip, or similar, put ONE drop of 3-in-1 onto the bearing.

Reverse procedure to complete the job.
