How to Reinstate RPM after installing Windows
If you install Windows onto a partition to test something, as I did recently, when you come to reboot into your normal partition
you'll suddenly have that sinking feeling, and realise what you've done. Yes, Windows obliterates the RPM boot system when it's installed.
Now, there's a very simple way to reinstate RPM without retyping everything, but you have to know the sneaky system. It's not obvious, so
my advice is, keep this explanation on paper where you can find it. You can't get to it on your computer, can you !
Put the RPM floppy in & reboot your computer and press the 'delete' key to
go into the BIOS
Change the boot sequence to check the floppy drive first. Save and exit to
reboot with the floppy
Run RPM243
Set the Master Boot Record (MBR) to Boot Manager:
On the MBR line press 'enter' to go to the details window bottom right
Press 'space' on 'MBR Execute Code' to select 'Boot Manager'
Cursor down one to 'Boot Interface Type' and press 'space' to get 'Text
25x80'
Press 'esc' to leave that window
Set the last cylinder to 'Boot Manager' (0xF0)
Move to the bottom empty partition with 'cursor down'
Press 'INS' and select 'Boot Manager' (0x0F) using the cursor down and
'enter'
Change 'Start Cyl' & 'End Cyl' to the last whole cylinder on the disk
Don't press F2 to save. This is very important. If you do you'll have
to type all the partition details in by hand.
Press F7. This recreates your partition table, but you can't see it
yet.
Remove the floppy & reboot and set the BIOS back to booting from the
hard drive first You should see everything back. Now you can adjust it to
your needs.
