Things that slow down your PC

Setup

Your PC may run slower than possible just because it's not set up right. It will run slow from new.
Possible reasons:

BIOS setup

Wear and Tear

The following things will make your PC run slower than it did when new:

Viruses, worms and spyware. You need up to date anti-virus software, which you update & run regularly. You also need the latest Windows updates. You also need a spyware program. This will remove programs that can record your username & password when logging in to your online bank !

A fragmented hard disk. Run the Windows defrag program.

Dust build-up. I use a vacuum cleaner that has a blow & suck. A sealant nozzle taped to the end of the hose makes a good blower. Wear a mask, and go easy. You need to blow out the dust between the fins of the processor heat sink in particular.

Extra processes running at startup. Check what's running. Do you need them all ?

The hard disk becoming faulty. Does your machine bootup OK every time. Any crashes that may be hard disk related ?

A nearly full hard drive.
