Using Spybot

Just run Spybot Advanced with a short cut to "D:\Apps\Spybot -
Search & Destroy\SpybotSD.exe" without a /easymode at the end.
You can stop programs starting at bootup at: Tools.System Startup
Just untick what you don't want to run.
Note: Spybot does run a resident program to watch out for you.

EMail – GMail, Incredimail

How to Use Incredimail with a GMail Account

You can send and receive emails using Incredimail and a GMail account. This allows you to send/receive emails from anywhere on your computer, and to get at them directly on your GMail account.

First to create and setup a GMail account.
Create a GMail account eg fred.bloggs@gmail.com
Login to your GMail account and click on 'Settings'
Click on the 'Forwarding and POP' label, and click on the 'Enable POP only for mail that arrives from now on'.
Click on 'Save'.

Next, to create an Incredimail account to send & receive emails using your new GMail account.
In Incredimail, click on 'Tools -> Accounts'.
Click on 'Add'
Select 'Let me configure settings myself' and then 'Next'
Enter the name you want to appear in your email eg “Fred Bloggs”
Enter your GMail email address eg fred.bloggs@gmail.com
Click 'Next'
Click 'Next' again on the 'Incoming and Outgoing mail servers' page
Enter the GMail username eg fred.bloggs@gmail.com and the password
Select the new line in the 'Mail Accounts' window, and click on 'Properties'.
I suggest you change the 'Account name' to eg fred.bloggs@gmail.com, so you know exactly which account it is.
Click on the 'Servers' tab.
Tick the 'Outgoing Mail Server, My server requires authentication' box.
Click on the 'Advanced' tab.
Change the 'Outgoing mail (SMTP) number to 465 and tick the 'secure connection' box.
Change the 'Incoming mail (POP3) number to 995 and tick the 'secure connection' box
Tick the 'Leave a copy of messages on server' box.
Finally, click on 'OK'.
Close the 'Mail Accounts' window.

Now test it.
Send an email to fred.bloggs@gmail.com from another email address. You can't send it from yourself, as GMail filters it. Use the 'From' button in the 'New Mail' window to select who you're sending from if necessary.
Then try sending an email to another address from fred.bloggs@gmail.com

When someone sends an email to fred.bloggs@gmail.com it gets stored on your GMail account, and gets sent onto your computer and gets received by Incredimail.
If you send an email as fred.bloggs@gmail.com using Incredimail, the sent email gets stored on your GMail account and gets sent on to whoever you sent it to.

Setting up Incredimail

Incredimail is a fancy email application like Outlook Express. It allows you to have fancy
backgrounds, emoticons etc.

Despite installing it to D:, the data goes onto C: here:

C:\Documents and Settings\Fred Bloggs\Local Settings\Application Data\IM

The messages, address book and signature are stored in:

Identities\long funny number\Message Store
Identities\long funny number\AddressBook
Identities\long funny number\Signature

To view who your emails are addressed to

Select View.Customize columns... and add “to”

Backing Up Incredimail

To backup all contacts and and emails sent/received (which also allows you to transfer your Incredimail setup to another computer), do this:
Go to File -> Data & Settings Transsfer -> To a new computer
I've done this and it created a 118MB .cab file, which I've put in F:\Incredimail Archive

Copying Incredimail data from an old partition

Copy C:\Documents & Settings\Fred Bloggs\Local Settings\Application Data\IM
from old partition to new one (maybe via D:).
This copies mail folders & styles etc.
What is thumbs.db ??

Updating Incredimail

First, don't do what I've just done. I had an error in Incredimail, reported it, and got
directed to the Incredimail site for a newer version. This suggests that you can just update
to the newer version without any problems. Rubbish. Now it won't run at all.
So, the the first thing I've done is to make a copy of the IM folder on C:. That way at
least the emails are safe !
I'll let you know how I get on !
First, I can't uninstall it. Found unwise.exe in D:\apps\Incredimail

Firefox

To speed it up, type about:config in the address field
Alter the entry "network.http.proxy.pipelining" to true
Alter the entry "network.http.pipelining.maxrequests" to 30 this will make firefox make 30 requests at once
Right click on a blank bit of screen and select New Integer, name "nglayout.initialpaint.delay" and set its value to "0".

Internet Explorer

Replacing Norton Firewall & Anti-virus

This section covers replacing Norton with Zonealram firewall and AVG Anti-virus
software. Both are free & have a good reputation.
1. Copy partition XP1 to another partition. This leaves Norton on the copy
if like me you've installed into C: with Windows XP.

2. Get the AVG serial number by giving your name & email address at their
site to get email with serial number (www.grisoft.com). You can do this
when you download it.

3. If you're on broadband (lucky you) pull out the ethernet cable !

4. Uninstall Norton:

Disable both by right clicking then in the system tray
Goto Start.Norton Internet Security.Uninstall NIS

5. Reboot

6. Install Zonealarm to C:\Program Files\Zome Labs\ZoneAlarm by clicking on
ZoneAlarmSetup_37_211.exe in D:\Downloaded Apps
Supply name & email address.

7. Install AVG to C:\Program Files\Grisoft\AVG6 by clicking on
avg6524fu_free.exe in D:\Downloaded Apps

8. Reboot

9. Create AVG rescue disk.

Updating InCD

First remove the current InCD with start.control panel.add/remove
Reboot
Disable Norton Internet Security & Norton Antivirus
Install new version
Reboot (which will reenable NIS & NAV as well).

Updating OpenOffice to version 1.1

Download .zip file from http://download.openoffice.org for version 1.1
to D:\Downloaded Apps (it's 65MB so takes about 5 hours on dial-up)
Extract .zip file to D:\Apps\XPOpenOffice110 (this allows for the installation
of a Linux version)
Close all other programs
Run D:\Apps\XPOpenOffice110\setup.exe
Select D:\Apps\XPOpenOffice110 as the destination.
It will create all the files/folders around the install folder already there.
When installed you can delete the install folder.

Java

See My Java Page

JCreator

This is a Java editor available from http://www.jcreator.com
I've had problems keeping version 2 while installing version 3.
Namely double-clicking on a .java file calls the old one.
The file type associations are relevant and found in Tools.Folder Options.File Types
My solution was to

1. Delete all file associations with JCreator.
2. Rename JCreator.exe to JcreatorV2.exe & JcreatorV3.exe
3. Recreate the associations.

I suspect a bug in the version 3 installer.

JPP

A Java Pre-Processor available from http://simtel.urc.bl.ac.yu/win95/java
This C++ program enables you to include preprocessor directives in your Java source.
So you create a .jpp file, it creates a .java file, and you compile with javac to a .class file.
This allows directives like #include & #define.
It's far from prefect. I'm looking for a better solution.

Eclipse

Audacity

To use the Lame mp3 dll with audacity do the following.
Install Audacity
Extract the Lame archive and extract the Lame.dll file into the main Audacity folder.
Start Audacity
Press ctrl-P
Click on Formats tab and press the find Library button
Finally, point Audacity to the Lame.dll file.
