Cost of Living Calculator Version 1.0

I've created this cost of living calculator to help you to understand what your living expenses will be when you live in New Zealand, and how much you will need to earn to achieve that. Suggestions, particularly from those living in NZ, are very welcome.
First time here ? Look at the information section first ! These calculators should now work perfectly in Internet Explorer 6.0 & Mozilla based browsers.

Cost of Shopping Calculator Version 1.0

This cost of shopping calculator should help you to work out how much you will spend on shopping, which can be put into the cost of living calculator. The quantities are for a family of two adults and two small children ie what we buy. Suggestions, particularly from those living in NZ, will be very welcome.

I suggest you play around with all the buttons to see what they do before you do a lot of work.
 

The Expenses Calculator

For a quick go, click on 'low', 'med' or 'high' to set all the numbers. Then click 'clear' on either the mortgage or rent line or you'll be paying for both. Note also that water & rates are probably included in the rent.
Then click on 'calculate total'. You can see what net & gross income you will need to cover your expenses.

The Shopping Calculator

For a quick go, click on 'low', 'med' or 'high' to set all the numbers and then click 'calculate total'.

Mortgage

The quick buttons are for a mortgage over 25 years @ 8.5% pa.
Low is for a $90,000 mortgage costing $8688/year, med is for a $180,000 mortgage costing $17388/year, and high is for a $360,00 mortgage costing $34788/year.

Rates

All properties get a Uniform Annual Charge (UAGC) of $115 per year (2004/2005). Christchurch UAGC info
Rates are usually included in the rent.

Water

The cost of water is usually included in the rent.

Electricity

The quick buttons are just for lighting, appliances & cooking. It doesn't include heating.
Current estimate (Thanks Mutz): $100 to $150 per month -> $1200 to $1800 per year.
Cost per unit = $0.14 to $0.19 / kW hour including GST
Line charges are: $0.056 to $0.07.84 / kW hour including GST
Total charge = $19.6 to $26.84 / kW hour including GST

Telephone & Internet

JetStream charge $112.48/month = $1350/year + calls. I need some numbers guys ! Low usage, dial-up & broadband help

Packages range from: $39.95 to $64.90 per month if you use Telecom for calling (plus 'extras' !)

Top broadband package & telephone cost totals $112.04/month ($1344.48/year), consisting of:

Satellite & Cable TV

A Sky full package is about $72/month, the maximum about $112/month

Fuel

Unleaded is about $1.21/L & premium about $1.28/L
Diesel is about $0.89/L plus pollution charge of ?

Car Replacement

The quick buttons are based on replacing your car every 3 years. So spending between $1500 & $9000 on the upgrade.

Opticians

Eyes tests are about $45, and glasses about $200. So 1x test & new pair of glasses every 2 years would cost $123/year per person.
Low = no tests/glasses, Med = 2x adults, high = 2x adults & 2x kids.

Income Tax

The gross income is calculated using the following income tax rules:
Gross income/year from $0 to $38k @ 19.5%, income above $38k up to $60k @ 33%, income above $60k @ 39%.
