How to get a Job

Page updated: 3 August 2004

My suggestions on where to look to maximise your chances of getting a job in New Zealand.

Your CV

Employers in New Zealand expect a different style of CV to those in the UK.
Since this is your main method of selling yourself, it's important to create the best CV you can.
I suggest you look at the career guides I've found on the net.

Searching for a job

There are a number of ways of looking for a job. Don't assume that you can only get a job offer from a company that has a vacancy. If they think you will be an asset to them, they may employ you even though they had no intention of employing someone at that time.
The main methods of finding companies that might employ you are:

Word of mouth/friends & family
Newspapers
Door knocking, phoning or sending CV to employers
Help from Work and Income NZ
Employment agencies

For someone from the UK, word of mouth is unlikely.

For job adverts look at the online newspapers I've found on the net.

To contact employers directly, you'll first need to find them. Here are some ideas:

Look at directories on which you can search for companies by what they produce, what they do, or other criteria. Some directories will suite your particular needs better than others, so try them all.

Try the search engines dedicated to New Zealand to search for companies.

Less obvious routes are societies & groups and libraries that may give you more leads.

There are other company based sites, such as HiTechNZ, where a group of companies get together and have a website with vacancies.

I have a list of employment agencies , but this is by no means all agencies in New Zealand. They will in general only be interested in you when you are in New Zealand, and available for interview.

Finally, one you may not have thought of:

You could put equity into a New Zealand company looking for capital and join the company as a shareholder/employee.

Good luck on your job hunting.
