Batteries
Companies pay large amounts of money to
advertise their products to encourage people to buy them. Who
pays for the adverts ? The purchasers of the products. Are the
products better ? Not because they are advertised !
Lets
take an example. Batteries. There is a well known make of
non-rechargeable battery, that advertises it's superiority over
'normal zinc chloride' batteries. Note the comparison which a
particular type of battery. A lower capacity type, at a much
lower price. Are they in fact better ? Well, they are better
than the cheap zinc chloride batteries, but what about comparing
them to other alkaline batteries. Lets check the actual
capacity of the battery. I think you might be surprised.
From
my Maplin catalogue:
Duracell Alkaline AA
battery: 2.6Ah (that's 2.6 Amps for one hour) @ 99p (in
1999) Varta Alkaline AA battery: 2.4Ah (that's 2.4 Amps for
one hour) @ 79p (in 1999)
So, 2.6/2.4Ah = 8% more capacity for 99/79p =
25% higher price !!!!
So what is my gripe –
people who pay higher prices for products because they are
advertised, when the products aren't actually better.
General Gripes
Why don't people put the dates of their
documents AT THE TOP ! Why do some (NZIS) not put dates on at
all !
Web pages that have so much stuff on them that it's
almost impossible to find everything. Web pages with huge
graphics – very slow on dial-up
Flashy websites that
just don't provide the information you're looking for.
If
the plural of foot in feet, why is the plural of hand, hands !?
Grammar &
Spelling
Common spelling mistakes and misuse of words
choices –
options (if you have three choices, and you pick one, what do you
call it ? A choice ! No, you have three options, and you have a
choice of the three. Each is an option.) your – you are
= you're seperate – separate rotovator / rotavator –
Not in any dictionary !!!! those ones – those amount
of carrots – number of carrots for free –
free Five priorities – there can only be one Likewise,
3 alternatives – no there can only be one alternative Its
– If it is short for “It is” then use
“It's” Missed out on - Missed
Shavers
Why are they so expensive ?!
If you
compare what's in a shaver with what's in a VCR, you'll see that
a VCR should be much more expensive. They must sell huge
numbers of both. The replacement foils for shavers are
incredibly expensive. There seem to be only a few
manufacturers. Is there something fishy business going on ?
TV Credits
Don't you just hate it when at the end of a
programme, when you want to see who that actor was, they shrink
the credits to advertise something stupid, and it's impossible to
read. Arrrrgggghhhhh !!!!!!
