Liquid Diets
Although liquid diets have been recently popularized as a pathway
toward body cleansing and renewed health,
they are equally useful for weight reduction.
The liquid diet is a low-calorie regimen in which sustenance is taken
solely in liquid, rather than solid form.
Since water is the basic component of all liquids, it has a
bloating effect, so it is difficult to drink all that water without discomfort.
With small servings of the chosen beverage spaced throughout the day,
you can remain somewhat satisfied.
And, as you can only drink your nourishment, the liquid diet
prevents you from straying with some "forbidden" food that is easily
sneaked onto the menu
In Search Of The Perfect Beverage
There is no single liquid diet.
For some it is a form of fasting in which only water is taken.
When used for spiritual/cleansing purposes, herbal teas may be acceptable too:
when strictly a weight loss tactic, tea, coffee and bouillon are taken.
Some liquid diets, center around unrestricted consumption of freshly
extracted fruit and vegetable juices. Many people practice this form
of dieting on a once-a-week or once-a-month basis to rejuvenate the body
systems while also producing a calorie reduction.
The once best-selling diet (Rockefeller) and later expanded into the Metracal
plan, translates the liquid diet into a milkshake ( evaporated milk, corn oil, flavoring, and sugar combined into a 900 calorie drink)
There are also some commercial drinks such as Instant Breakfast- Carnation Slender.
The liquid diet can only be followed for a set time, ranging from one day to one month.
Once the food fast is over, it is recommended that solids be reintroduced gradually
and the first few meals be bland and moderate in size.
Those who wish to remain on a liquid diet longer to flush out toxins are
advised a diet of fruit juice for one week prior to any complete fast.
During the fasting period, water is taken for hunger or thirst;
a gallon a day is suggested.
A little lemon juice, honey, or molasses may be added to the water for
it's laxative effect.
A return to fruit juice, one day of juice for each day of fasting,
precedes the reentry into the  world of solid food.
This is also known as "scientific" or "rational" fasting.

Is This Harmful ?
It depends on each individual and their body stores before the diet.
You can expect protein and calcium inadequacies if this is pursued for
too long; low levels of Vitamin C, thiamin, and iron on a prolonged milk-based diet; and multiple nutritional deficiencies on a water-coffee-tea regime.
And those who must "eat" will not be emotionally able to handle this type of diet.
While this diet may help take off pounds, it will not help you to nurture that
slim figure in the future.
But rest assured, that not all liquid combinations are nutritionally deficient.
A juice diet with all essential vitamins and minerals is harmless and uplifting
if done for a short time span. The lack of protein and certain B vitamins
can be reversed by blending the juice with wheat germ or brewer's yeast.
A milk-based drink combined with fruit ( a homemade fruitshake)
can also provide nutritional meals on a limited calorie intake.
You should be fully aware of any shortcomings before you start a diet such as this.
Sometimes you have to be on a liquid diet, due to medical reasons (see the links below)
And as always, confer with your doctor.
