Chapter Four: Alone with a Friend
He opened his eyes once again to find that he still was in the dark. Quickly he found that Spearow was pressed up against his back waiting for Etan to make any kind of movement, struggle, or sound. He felt for Spearow trying to find Spearow’s beak. Spearow was naturally a little startled by Etan’s grasping for him but was eager to help his friend in anyway. Once Etan did find Spearow’s beak he pressed his ropes that were around his wrists against it and said, “Ahmmhum…” with his still muffled voice. He wasn’t saying anything in particular but used his voice to signal Spearow to cut the ropes. Spearow was quick to decode this message and started pecking at the ropes right away. It seemed a bit tuff at first, but after a few pecks Spearow managed to complete the task at hand in a matter of a minute or two. Soon after Etan untied the gag and a few other knots that had been used to constrain him. Spearow sqealed, “Are you all right?! Etan say something!” “Shhhh! Be quite or else Alan may hear you Spearow. Thanks for your help. I have a plan.” This time Spearow whispered, “Well, tell me. I’m frightened Etan. Where are we going?” “I don’t know. Do you remember fighting? Fighting with your friends on the Pokemon reserve? Training last night? Do you remember how we used tackle to finish the mattress off?” Etan was whispering but you could still hear his enthusiasm. Spearow could especially hear it now when the only thing that existed about Etan was his voice due to the darkness. “Yes, Etan. I remember…” “Well, you must use that skill on Alan. I know you were having fun before, but now you have a reason to use force. You have a reason to fight back. Think about Arial. Think about Mick. If I’m important to you...” Spearow said, “Of course…” Etan interrupted Spearow to finish what he had been saying, “think about me. If all of this fails to inspire you, you must at least think about yourself. Help bring justice with your talent and help me rescue mom and dad, even if that means fighting against Alan.” Spearow fell silent.
Apparently Etan’s inspirational speech came at the right timing because the van began to slow and eventually stopped. Etan whispered, “Ready Spearow? I’ll be right beside you. Tackle at what ever appears with the light!” Spearow still felt as if he needed to be silent but softly said, “Yeah…” They both listened as Alan got out of the van and slowly walked towards the back doors. He fiddled with his keys and then started to turn the latches on the back door. All of this seemed to take forever even though it all had been taking place in little over a minute. A burst of light shot into the cramped area that Spearow and Etan had been taken prisoners. Surprisingly Etan was actually the first to attack. He slammed against the doors before Alan could even open them fully. This action ended with Alan taken back by a few steps and Etan on the ground where Alan had just been. Alan was infuriated and his beat red face showed this. He was staring directly at Etan and appeared as if he was thinking about stomping on Etan while Etan was struggling to get back off of the ground. But where was Spearow? He stood still watching all of this happen. He had been paralyzed with the thought of fighting to fight. He had been playing all of those other times. Etan’s speech was good, but hadn’t struck Spearow strongly. Spearow still deeply felt that playing was good, but fighting was extremely different. However, all of what Etan had told Spearow had finally made sense to him. It had taken the sight of his friend almost being stomped on by Alan to really stir up Spearow’s anger—his defensive side.
Spearow flew out clawing at Alan’s head. It was fighting, but it was more of a rage. No Pokemon should have been able to have the anger that Spearow had built up. Alan was startled and then terrified. A tackle there, a few piercing pecks in the arm, some more clawing of the face…It lasted this way until Alan was stepping back in horror, tripped, and then hit his head on the concrete. Alan had passed out, but Spearow kept on attacking. “Stop! Stop!” yelled Etan, but Spearow couldn’t hear him. “I’m sorry Spearow! We’re all fine! It’s ok now!” It may not have been the words that finally got through to Spearow, but something did. “Oh my gosh…is…is he still alive.” Etan said this as he took Alan’s pulse. “Well, I guess he is, but it might take him a while to recuperate. I know we shouldn’t, but I think we need to call an ambulance. Wait, where are we?” Spearow was still shocked at what he had done and continued to stare at the body that laid motionless before him. Etan noticed this right away and tried to comfort Spearow, “Spearow…It isn’t your fault. I…I will never again ask you to use your anger to fight. I’m sorry.” Spearow still stared at Alan. It was as if he didn’t have any control during the very brief time that lead to Alan’s injuries. He always had control. This was the first time that he didn’t and the result was this, a bloody man who could have died. “Spearow, there was no other way. The major injuries aren’t even because of you. If he hadn’t tripped, Alan would only have had a few scratch marks. You have to press on Spearow. Life moves with or without you, and we need to find Mick and Arial. Do you still want to help me? Or are you going to leave now…” Etan trailed off as he said those last few dreaded words. “Yes, I’m still coming Etan. My loyalties will always remain with your family.” Etan replied, “I’m honored my friend.”
For the first time they started to really look around but were a bit nervous. After all, this building that they had stopped by must have been one of Team Star’s hideouts crawling with all sorts of slimy people. They wondered if someone would find Alan knocked unconscience and if so how long would it take to find him lying there. In the end they decided to not go in search for a phone to call for an ambulance. It just was too risky. The building that they were at actually wasn’t a shady one. It was a big company called Sionilli Institute of Technology and was about ten stories high. The place that the black van was parked at was in the back parking lot, fairly close to a back door. However, the back door was locked and required a number code to get inside. “So, now what do we do Etan? There is no use in being somewhere if you can’t get in.” Etan went towards the van and rested his back on it while he thought aloud, “Well, the back door isn’t open, but I’m sure that the front door would be. I just don’t know if they would let us get past the front desk though, and I think that there is a good chance that we would be caught by Team Star if we went that way…” As soon as he said this, someone in a suit opened the back door while coming out of the building. Immediately the man saw Alan sprawled out on the ground in the parking lot. The man in the suit did not see Etan and his Spearow though. This was due to two reasons. The side of the van that Etan had been leaning against happened to be facing the direction opposite of the door that the man in the suit came out of. Also, the man in the suit only had one objective at the time, which was to run over and assist the bleeding man in the parking lot.
