The Lord of the Rings Characters
There are many Lord of the Rings characters, and to all the fans that somehow read this, this might help you.
Frodo Baggins (Frodo, son of Drogo)
Hobbit
Frodo is probably considered THE main character for TLOTR, the subplots have many main characters...Elijah Wood plays him in the movies.
Frodo is your basic hobbit, except he inherits Bag End from Bilbo Baggins, his uncle, talks with the elves, and has dwarf friends...Maybe he isn't so normal. In his inheritance, Frodo gets a golden ring.
Aragorn (Son of Arathorn)
Human
AKA: Strider, The Dunadan, Thorongil, Elessar, Elfstone...
Aragorn is a main character in the series. Viggo Mortensen plays him in the movies.
Aragorn is a Ranger. He helps Frodo and his companions on the journey to Rivendell, where he grew up, being a friend of Gandalf. Throughout the movies/books you discover that he is very talented. He can speak the Elvin tongue very well, and he seems to have connections almost anywhere. He is in fact the descendant of Isildur, who didn't destroy the ring when he had the chance. Aragorn is afraid that he is too much like his ancestors and doesn't have faith in himself, unlike a certain elf.*cough cough*
Legolas Greenleaf (Son of Thranduil)
Elf
Legolas is the main elf in this series, but there are a few others that shine out. Orlando Bloom plays Legolas.
Legolas comes into the story during the Council of Elrond, being a messenger from his father, the King of the Elves of Northern Mirkwood.
Gimli (Gimli, son of Gloin)
Dwarf
Gimli is the main dwarf in this series, and he's in the Fellowship. He is played by John Rhys-Davies.
Gimli is also introduced at the Council of Elrond, helping represent dwarves by fighting with Legolas/elves.:) He loves the underground, like all elves, and loves the things that come from in the earth, like gold, jewels, and especially mithril (a rare, very strong, and pretty metal...I think).
Boromir (Son of Denethor)
Human
Boromir is one of the Fellowship. Sean Bean plays him in the movies.
Boromir is from the land of Gondor. He is the son of its Steward. (The Steward of Gondor takes care of the duties the king would, but only until the king returns...That's Aragorn for Gondor.) Boromir is very proud and thinks the ring should be used against Sauron and to save Minas Tirith.
Gandalf Stormcrow
Wizard
AKA: Mithrandir (among Elves), Gandalf the Grey, the Grey Pilgrim, the Grey Wanderer, the Grey Messenger...Tharkun (among Dwarves), Olorin (in the West in his youth), and Incanus (in the South)
Gandalf is the good wizard in TLOTR. Ian McKellen plays Gandalf in the movies.
Ahhhhhhhhh, Gandalf. He is the major explainer in the books, along with Elrond. He is an old wizard that went and still goes through very much. He is of the Third Age of Middle Earth, along with the Elves. Gandalf is Frodo's guider and friend. He helps the causes in whatever way he can and gives advice without seeming to give it sometimes. Explaining Gandalf in one word would be: Wise! He tries to hint to people what could happen, but most of them don't or won't get it. Anywho, Gandalf literally dies after the victorious battle with the Balrog of Morgoth, in the second book, and becomes Gandalf the White. That makes him more powerful than ever.
Arwen Halfelven(Daughter of Elrond)
Elf
Arwen is Aragorn's love. In the books, almost nothing is mentioned in that part, but the movies over-do the whole love triangle thing...Liv Tyler plays Arwen in the movies.
Arwen is said to be the most beautiful living creature on Middle Earth, but all girls know that it's Aragorn!!! Actually, there is some very minor conflict between the ideas that Arwen, the Evenstar, or Galadriel, the something, is the most beautiful. I personally think that Arwen is what keeps Aragorn going through everything when he questions why and the answer of saving all good living things doesn't quite cut it...
Galadriel
Elf
Galadriel seems to be the wisest and oldest elf. Kate Blanchett plays her. She is also a bearer of a ring of power, Nenya, the Ring of Adamant.
Galadriel is one powerful mother. I think she could sort of be like my thought of Mother Nature. She is very powerful and seems to be more in charge of Lothlorien (Lorien is the short name for it) than her husband, Celeborn. She came from the mountains in the west a long time ago, but that part of her story isn't in these books...
Halfelven. Elrond Halfelven.
Elf
Elrond is the lord of Rivendell. He is played by Hugo Weaving.
There isn't too much to say for Elrond in TLOTR series. Aragorn grew up by him, probably looking at Elrond as sort of a father figure...that would lead to the knowing of Arwen. Elrond wants Arwen to go to the undying lands, but he knows she loves Aragorn. He also does different things to rally everyone to fight against Sauron, and he reforges the sword, Narsil. (Aragorn renames it Anduril, Flame of the West.) He basically helps in the background for the most part. Note that the Fellowship comes from the Council of Elrond.
Eowyn
Human
Eowyn is the niece of Theoden, King of Rohan. She is in that whole love triangle thingie (she "loves" Aragorn). Her character is very well played by Miranda Otto.
Eowyn wants more than anything to fight for the ones she loves, but the fact that she's a girl sort of stops that from happening. She is very strong willed and seems to only want to fight, but I think (when I type that it means I either can't remember if it's in the books or I don't know if anyone else thinks this, also) she also wants to have a family and child/children to fuss over while making sure her people are safe, also. Her word is tough.
Eomer
Human
Eomer is the brother of Eowyn and heir to the throne of Rohan. He's played by Karl Urban, and I think he could have been a whee bit cuter. (It would go with his character better, me thinks.)
Eomer is Captain of the Rohirrim, the rider soldier dudes of Rohan. He is a lot like his sister being tough, brave, and helping in the best way he can.
Peregrin Took& Meriadoc Brandybuck
Hobbits
Merry is Dominic Monaghan, and Billy Boyd is Pippin.
I put these two together because they're never apart until the third book. Pippin goes to Minas Tirith because of looking into the Palentir (glass ball thingie that Sauron can control), and Merry goes to Rohan to and pledges allegiance to King Theodon. Pippin ends up doing that to Denethor, Steward of Gondor. Merry seems more serious and mature, while Pippin is more curious and doesn't comtemplate over things first.
Bilbo
Hobbit
Bilbo is old in this story. If you like him, then make sure you read The Hobbit. Ian Holms plays Bilbo in the movies.
Bilbo is Frodo's much older cousin. The books start off with him being 111, or eleventy-one, and Frodo being 33. He is like the gentle, older brother to the other hobbits of the story...Bilbo loves adventures and liturature so he fits in well with the Elves.
Denethor
Human
Denethor is the father of Boromir and Faramir. John Noble plays him.
Stupid people! They, whoever wrote the movie script, made Denethor out to be evil. Denethor liked Boromir somewhat better than Faramir because he could understand Boromir better. They were more alike. Denethor grieves after Boromir's death instead of fighting, so he might be a little crazy. After Faramir gets fatally injured Denethor goes over the edge because he used to be harsh with him, and he was the one that sent Faramir out seemingly to his death. I would probably have gone crazy, too. He also does NOT run screaming off of the top of Minas Tirith, but he does end up dying. He also tries to burn Faramir with him. ;_; He doesn't succeed though. One other thing, Denethor is VERY proud^.^
Faramir
Human
Faramir is one of my favorite minor characters.^^ David Wenham plays him in the movies.
Faramir is the youngest son of Denethor, and the heir to the Stewardship. Aragorn could get in the way of that, though...Faramir seems more rational than Boromir was, and he also proved himself stronger by resisting the ring.
Samwise Gamgee (son of Old Gaffer)
Hobbit
Samwise is the best friend of Frodo. Sean Astin splendidly acts his character.
Sam is about the simplest being in TLOTR. He loves Frodo, not in a sick way, and would die for him without a flinch. Sam loves gardening and food...That's about it for Sam.
King Theoden
Human
Bernard Hill plays King Theoden.
King Theoden is a proud man, but he knows when to let go of his pride. He is King of all Rohan, and he is a great soldier and leader. I should probably say was because the Witch King ends up killing that honorable and grandfather-like man. ;_; He acted like Eomer and Eowyn were his own children, even right after his son dies. (I think that makes him somewhat stronger than Denethor.) Anywho, King Theoden was a very cool ruler.
Treebeard
Ent
Treebeard is John Rhys-Davies!!! That is soo cool. I didn't know that either.
Treebeard is an Ent. Ents are tree herders. They woke up trees and taught them how to "talk" and other things...Treebeard is very wise and patient also, but when he gets mad at you,"I'd get out of town." Inside joke there to whoever has seen The Nightmare Before Christmas. Treebeard is the oldest Ent, and seemingly the wisest one, also.
Gollum
Stoor
AKA: Smeagol
I think that Gollum is the character that you're not supposed to like, but somehow he seems awesome. Andy Serkis acts Gollum out.
First things first, Smeagol is good. Gollum is bad. Simple enough? Ok, now that that's out, I can explain. Smeagol was once a Stoor. I believe that a Stoor is like a Hobbit, but they love water. That means Smeagol used to be like the Brandybucks and Tooks.O.o Gollum comes in when Smeagol and his best friend, Deagol, were fishing. Deagol finds a pretty ring, and when Smeagol sees it...dun dun dun...the Ring turns Smeagol into an evil being. Smeagol wants to be nice, and he wants Frodo and Sam to like him, but Gollum stays in his mind hiding until something bad happens. Basically, Smeagol is cute and needs a hug, but Gollum is evil and likes sharp teethed grins.
Grima Wormtongue
Human?
Wormtongue is sort of like a minor major character. In the movies, he does less than in the books... Brad Dourif plays him.
Wormtongue is exactly what his name suggests. He is a servant of the evil Saruman, and he poisoned King Theoden by some mean of Saruman... He doesn't really seem to think too much for himself, so he made the biggest mistake of getting in league with Saruman, and his second biggest mistake was tossing the Palentir out of Isengard and Pippin finds it... I think with the right teacher Wormtongue could become good. He would also have to change his name.
Saruman
Wizard
AKA: The White Wizard, The White Hand(maybe)
Saruman is the bad wizard in this movie. Christopher Lee plays him! I didn't know that.!!
Saruman wants to become more powerful than Sauron, but he isn't really a threat, in Sauron's eyes, if he'd never get the Ring. Saruman started out good, but he became power hungry and forgot why he was good in the first place. I think that he accidentally took some poison or something...Oh, yeah and he was so crazy that he bred his own army of Uruk-hai!!!
Witch-King of Angmar
Living Dead?
AKA:Lord of the Nazgul, Chieftain of the Ringwraiths, the Black Captain, Lord of Morgul
The Witch King is coolest among cool. Go Dragon stead!!!! I'm pretty sure that it is all animated.
The Witch King is the leader of the Nazgul. He was the chief lieutenant of Sauron until Eowyn and Merry killed it. I don't think it really has too many feelings, but you gotta give it to him; he's very loyal. I think that's only because he's controlled by the Ring of POWA. (I'm sort of hyper right now.)
Shelob
BIG Spider
Shelob would most likely be another computer animation.;)
Shelob. She, yes she, likes playing with her food. I don't know what her mother taught her, but tsk tsk. Actually, she was in that cave/tunnel even before Galadriel came over the mountains! That's oooooold. She likes sweeter meat than orcs, but that's what she uasually gets. Sauron thinks that she's his pet, but she survived before him, and she would after. Well, I believe that she's still alive, but the book says that her fate wouldn't be said in that book, sooOoooo. Take that however you want it. Her story is most likely in one of Tolkein's other books.
Sauron the Dark Lord
Living Creation...
He would be another computer animation. ;_;
Sauron is the bad of the bad guys. The sad thing is he used to be a servant of another bad guy a looong time before. That's just scary. 0_0 Anywho, he wants his Ring back however he can get it...That could get bad...Hmmm. Basically, Sauron's character is just plain evil. What a shocker!!!!
Ringwraiths
Living Dead
Alias: The Black (Nine) Riders, Nazgul...
They are Fake, also. It's sad...
The ringwraiths are under the control of the Ring, just like their leader. They just want the Ring...That's about it.
Places
Lothlorien
AKA: Laurelindorenan, Lorien
This is where Galadriel and Celeborn rule. It is probably the farthest East Elves go. The forest is known as the Golden Wood because its leaves, in the winter, stay on the trees and turn gold.
Terich Ungol
AKA:Shelob's Lair, the tunnel...
This would be where Shelob lives. I found a good description of it. (TTT, Ch. Shelob's Lair, pg.369) "Here the air was still, stagnant, heavy, and sound fell dead. They walked as it were in a black vapour wrought of veritable darkness itself that, as it was breathed, brought blindness not only to the eyes but to the mind, so that even the memory of colours and of forms and of any light faded out of thought. Night had always been, and always would be, and night was all." That is Tolkien all the way!!!!! Ain't it great?:)
Rivendell
I wanted to put this somewhere, but I only the character LOTR up so it'll be on here. This might clear things up...Maybe not. These are the gifts that Galadriel gave the Felllowship.
Frodo:The phial that has the light of Earendil's star trapped inside.
Aragorn:A sword sheath that Anduril fit perfectly in. The sword that goes inside of it will never get stained or be broken. He also got a brooch that sounded a lot like Arwen's necklace...
Sam:Sam's gift goes with the end of the third book. He got a small, rey wood box that had a G in Elf runes on it, standing for Galadriel. Inside was earth from Galadriel's orchard that grows VERY well.
Merry&Pippin:They both got a belt of silver and a clasp like a golden flower.
Legolas:A bow and quiver of arrows made in Lorien that was stronger than his other one.
Gimli:He boldly and Very politely requested a hair of Galadriel...He got three.
Boromir:He got a belt of gold.
All of them got elven cloaks with a prettiful green clasp that were made by Galadriel and her ladies/maidens.
One question for the books...Is darkling actually a word? That's all I want to know.
I have to go right now, but look later for updates since I know how to do this now.
