EXPECTO PATRONUM

When the Expecto Patronum incantation is performed, a guardian is issued out of the wand that protects the witch or wizard against dark forces, mainly dementors. The Patronus is a positive force that works against the evil intentions of the dementor. The spell was discovered in the eleventh century by Felix Veron, who was wrongly sent to Azkaban. He found that being constantly cheerful to the dementors made them leave him alone, and when released he formulated the strange results into the Expecto Patronus incantation.

"expecto" -- Latin for 'I await'
"patronum" -- Latin for 'protector' or 'defender'
