Terms and Justifications:


genkan = area just inside a Japanese home (usually several inches lower than the rest of the floor) where one removes one's shoes; used because it's a term that doesn't translate well.

hiruiseki = tear gems; used because it sounds better and because it's what they're called.

igurka = spy-demons; used because I totally made it up and because I needed a handy-dandy name for the spy-demon species that I also totally made up.

Inari = rice god and god of foxes; used because it's a proper name and because Kurama's occasional invocation of this deity is fairly well-established fanon.

Jagan = mystical third eye; used because that's what it's called.

Jaganshi = one who possesses the Jagan = nickname or title for Hiei; used because there just aren't that many synonyms, and because its use as an informal species title is fairly well-established fanon.

kami = god or spirit = nickname or title for Koenma; used because there just aren't that many synonyms, and because its use as an informal species name is fairly well-established fanon.

katana = traditional Japanese samurai sword; used because it's the proper term for that weapon, and saying "sword" over and over gets repetitive.

ki = energy; used because it's short, it's simple, it's actually in the dictionary, and it has informative derivatives.

kitsune = spirit fox = nickname or title for Kurama; used because there just aren't that many synonyms, and because its use as an informal species title is fairly well-established fanon.

Kokuryuuha = immolating black dragon wave/Dragon of the Darkness Flame; used because it's a lot shorter than either of those translations and because it sounds better.

koorime = Yukina's people; used because 'ice demons' is too generic and because its use as an informal species name is fairly well-established fanon.

Kurai = dark = title for the Orb; used because I wanted it to have a title, and to keep it simple.

Makai = demon world; used because it's a proper name and I like it better than the direct translation.

Ningenkai = human world; used because it's a proper name and I like it better than the direct translation.

oni = ogre = nickname or title for the horned beings that run Koenma's office; used because 'ogre' was employed principally as a title for specifically Jorge, leaving me with no generic species label, and because its use as an informal species name is fairly well-established fanon.

rei gun = spirit gun; used because it sounds better and also is an unintentional translation-based pun.

rei ken = spirit sword; used because it sounds better and because I'd already decided to use 'rei gun'.

Reikai = spirit world; used because it's a proper name and I like it better than the direct translation.

reiki = human energy; used because it's a handy way to differentiate between demon energy and human energy at a glance and with fewer words.

reikodan = one of Yuusuke's attacks, incorrectly referred to as the Spirit Wave in the dub; used because it's totally not the Spirit Wave, and because it sounds cooler anyway.

sanjiyan = three-eyed demon = nickname or title for Hiei; used because it's really cool, and provides me with one more directly translatable synonym.

shishi-odoshi = deer chaser = those little reeds that fill with water and then plink down on the rocks; used because 'deer-chaser' sounds stupid to me.

Tantei = detective/detective group = title for Yuusuke and his team; used because it's their title and it beats 'Spirit Detectives' any day. youki = demon energy; used because it's a handy way to differentiate between demon energy and human energy at a glance and with fewer words.

youko = demon fox = nickname or title for Kurama; used because there just aren't that many synonyms, and because its use as an informal species title is canon.
