The former Smokey Mountain Dump site

The huge Smokey mountain Manila dump, which reached the height of its fame during the Marcos era, has been done away with. Many of the people who used to live on that dump were moved into temporary and permanent government housing. The dump was divided up into smaller dumps around & near the city which still exist with garbage pickers. the actual spot that was the center of Smokey Mountain is now a grassy overgrown hill that is off limits. Sometimes the hill still experiences fires due to the gases escaping out of all the garbage below.

The river with Smokey Mountain in the background, now overgrown with grass.

The white buildings are the government-built permanent housing. The stated plan is for all of the residents in the temporary housing will be shifted to similar permanent housing, but when this will be done is unknown.

Closer look at smokey mountain, which is now off limits to the public.
