Calbayog City - traffic, bridge & market

The name of the city is derived from the word "cal" (Spanish for lime) and "bayog", a tree whose extract was used in building churches. Calbayog boomed during the American era and has become a commercial, industrial, and fishing center as well as the principal outposts for Samar’s northern plains.

While the city limits cover a vast 903 km², the center is merely a medium sized town, surrounded by fertile lowland. Its Sacred Heart Plaza and Nijaga Park has multi-colored lanes and pavements made of local stones, and gardens of lush tropical plants. Mat-making is a local handicraft and copra and abaca are shipped from here.

You can fly to and from Manila three times a week from the Calbayog airport and local transportation is plentiful and easy to get. Boats going inter-island can be secured on a fairly regular basis as well.
