Osmena Circle and Surrounds

Osmena Circle, a large traffic circle around a park and statue in the uptown area of Cebu.

Sergio S. Osmena, Sr. was the second President of the Commonwealth of the Philippines. He served as president from Aug. 1, 1944 to May 28, 1946.

He was Quezon's main partner in the country's quest for freedom. He became president of the commonwealth after Quezon's death in 1944. He established the commonwealth govt-in-exile in the United States during WWII. After the war he lead the country to the road of recovery. He ran for re-election in 1946, but refused to campaign, saying that the people knew about his record of 40 years of honest and faithful service. Subsequently, he lost the election to Manuel Roxas who was tacitly supported by Gen. MacArthur. History would remember him as a selfless patriot and a dedicated public servant.

East of Osmena Circle is a very large Inglesia de Christo Church. This is a popular pseudo-Christian cult in the Philippines. They claim theirs is the only true church on earth.

The Christian teaching which is under Iglesia's fire is the divinity of Jesus Christ. Like the Jehovah's Witnesses, Iglesia claims that Jesus Christ is not God but a created being. They also deny there is any Trinity using the same cliche' others do, you can't find the word "Trinity" in the Bible. Neither is the Philippines mentioned in the Bible, but that doesn't mean it doesn't exist.

The Rizal Library and Public Museum are located together and are just slightly north of Osmena circle.

Interior of the Museum

Artwork includes a painting of General Dougalas Macarthur returning to the Philippines, as promised, during World War II.

Overrun by Japanese forces at Bataan, MacArthur was ordered by President Franklin Roosevelt to withdraw to Australia. Before MacArthur and his family escaped, he made the famous vow, "I shall return." In 1942 he was made the supreme commander of Allied forces in the southwest Pacific and by 1945 had liberated the Philippines on the way to invading Japan.
