Positions of the Feet

There are five positions of the feet in ballet. Of these five,

  • third is not generally used (a prepatory position for the more difficult fifth position).
Fourth position has two variations:
  • either 'crossed' with the corresponding toes/heels directly parallel from each other, or
  • 'open' with front foot's heel parallel from back foot's heel.

How do you do that? All positions in ballet have turned out legs, opening from the thigh using the rotator muscles. The arch of the foot should be lifted, all toes on the ground, legs straight, and pelvis square.

Why are the legs turned out? Turned-out legs makes for better extension, and allows the legs to be lifted higher. Also, it is more aesthetically pleasing, and provides for a stable base for balancing, and freer range of movement.
