One morning on my way to work, while walking towards the 183rd train station on the 4 line, I was passing by 183rd street in the Bronx when two under cover cops jumped out of their vehicle and approached an African American male who was walking ahead of me. They pushed him against a parked car and began to search him while asking him his name. The man answered, “my name is Jamal but why are you harrasing me? One of the cops told him, “ listen you piece of s**t, shut up before I plant something on you and arrest you.” I was appalled by what I heard. Especially because the cop that stated that was a Latin cop and because I’m a Latin woman. I was ashamed. I kept walking, but I wanted so much to just tell the cops what I thought about them abusing their positions of authority. I have regretted not doing it; so I felt it would only be right to express my freedom of speech and voice my thoughts to my community.
As a single mom living from check to check and unfortunately living in the hood, the last thing we need is to be harrased by the people we pay to protect us. Now don’t get me wrong there are a lot of great cops, but this article is about the ones that abuse there position to the limit. You guys are the ones that create more anger and violence to my hood. What gives you the right to judge my brothers and sisters without any proof or evidence of any wrong doings? Because of the way they dress, or walk, or talk? Shame on you for being so corrupt. I personally have been disrespected by those evil cops and have been embarrassed by them in front of my son, all because that day I felt like wearing some sweat pants and a big shirt. I was labeled just another delinquent from the block. The police officer never asked me my name or had the courtesy to call me Ms. He called me a b***h without even knowing who I was. Well, surprise to you officer...I’m a professional writer..... ooohh meaning, I have the intellect to fight you back with my ammo which is my pen & a piece of paper. I’m not going to say his name, but I’ll refer to him as the "Evil Cop." As a writer, the first amendment protects me to say what is on my mind, so I have the last word after all and you must hate that, right evil cop? The destruction that you bring to my community is worse than the truth about you.
I see women and children crying in the aftermath of the police brutality in our neighborhooods. I feel the tension in my neighborhood when we have to light candles for another innocent victim that was gunned down by the
Boys in Blue. The saddest thing is that we don’t have backyards to play in and our parks are taken over by stick up kids or are just too dirty and too much of a health risk to let our kids play in, so the corners become the meeting spots. We are victims of our environment, we are dammed if we do good and we are dammed if we do bad. To the "Evil Cops," instead of just trying to meet arrest quotas, find other ways to get the kids off the corner. This is not right my people! The minority is the majority, so let’s unite and bring attention to this obvious deadly problem. “Don’t be silenced," speak on it like I’m doing. Thanks to P.A.L for their efforts to bring our kids other options and other similar organizations that make our communities a little more bearable and big up to those cops that stand up to those bad apples in your precincts. Thank you for doing the right thing. You saved a life! Every action has a reaction, whether positive or negative. Which will you choose to support?
