Cousy's CD Reviews- Nirvana- Nevermind...

Weeks of Jan.22- Mar.11, 2003

ALBUM: Nevermind
ARTIST: Nirvana
LABEL: Geffen DGC- 1991
RATING: 9 out of 10

The legendary, revolutionary album itself, Nevermind, is classic Nirvana from the early 90’s. I think it’s fair to say that the youth of today don’t mind much attention to it but everything they listen to today has been influenced by this piece of art.

If you’re not a fan of the hard rock/pop, Nevermind is a tough first listen but once you get used to Cobain’s unique rasping voice, it’s easier to digest. Songs like Smells Like Teen Spirit and Come As You Are remain true classics, often heard on the radio, but there are some real gems on this disc. Cobain writes some wonderful lyrics in Lithium and Drain You. Dave Grohl (Foo Fighters, Queens of the Stone Age) plays the drums, keeping a real tight check on rhythm in every track. And let’s be honest, Krist Novoselic and his bass guitar are very solid in Lounge Act, Lithium, etc. The Beatles influence is felt near the end of the album in On A Plain, which is a true pop song in disguise.

I would not recommend this to the younger kids; it’s a little hard on their ears. Perhaps that’s why it has taken me so long to give a listen to Nirvana. However, I’m glad that I have because I’ve found out, for myself, that Nirvana isn’t nearly as hard rock as I previously thought. For those who are a little leery of Nirvana, don’t be. Nevermind is a great album that seems to get better every time you listen to it, not to mention its impact on the music industry will forever be known. So, get with it already!
