Cousy's CD Reviews- The Beatles- Rubber Soul

Weeks of Apr.18-May.10, 2003

ALBUM: Rubber Soul
ARTIST: The Beatles
LABEL: Parlophone- 1965
RATING: 9.75 out of 10

Rubber Soul: the album of revolution for the Liverpudlians known as The Beatles. And you might be asking, why did it not get a 10 out of 10? Well, it would have but one song, I felt, brought the album down. No offense for George Harrison, the man has some incredible tunes, but ‘Think For Yourself’ was unpleasant. He does get better with ‘If I Needed Someone’ it’s a beauty. But if (Think For Yourself) wasn’t on the album, Rubber Soul would be even better than it already is.

That’s the only negative thing I can say about this classic rock album. The Beatles really changed the tide with this one; they really planted firm steps in a new direction for pop music. Now, depending on your mood, there’s a song for everyone but keep one thing in mind: it’s all very, very, VERY catchy!

Drive My Car has an upbeat tempo worthy of blasting out of your car speakers on the road. The “Beep Beeps” are a nice touch, proof that the Fab Four recognize the value of little harmonies in their music. You Won’t See Me is the definition of catchy pop, great guitar melodies and short and sweet lyrics keep you bouncing along with the rhythm. Of course, I have to mention Run For Your Life. Lennon gets weird in this song, as he talks about wanting to hurt a girl, wanting to chase after her. You would think this is a real dark, negative song but no, it’s actually quite upbeat, happy-go-lucky. Just an example of The Beatles ability to produce amazing pop music. But there’s more to be said.

Norwegian Wood was the first song to incorporate Eastern instruments, adding a sitar part. Nowhere Man was the first Beatles song that didn’t talk about the regular “boy loves girl” relationship theme. In My Life, a wonderful melody, looking back on life (perfect as a graduation song), is the first Beatles song based on personal experience. So, there were a few firsts on this record. Put all of this together, add the “Beatlemania” aura and the fact that Lennon & McCartney were beginning to write some superb lyrics and you’ve got yourself a winner. Boy, I wonder how they sound when they get older, when they experiment more…
