Cousy's CD Reviews- Weezer- Weezer (The Green Album)

Weeks of Mar.11- Apr.1, 2003

ALBUM: Weezer (The Green Album)
ARTIST: Weezer
LABEL: Geffen/Interscope- 2001
RATING: 9.25 out of 10

While listening to this album, Weezer’s comeback disc after 5 years out of the loop, I created a new word: weezerific. Weezerific describes this album very nicely I think. But perhaps it would be best if I explain what weezerific means. Weezerific refers to something that is pleasant to the ear, something that is catchy, something that brings a smile to your face upon seeing or listening to that something. The Green Album provides all of this in 28 minutes of song play. 10 songs strung together in such a way as though you’ll think you’ve just started the album. But, that’s what makes the album so good.

The first four tracks, notably Don’t Let Go and Photograph really give the cd a good kick in the right direction. With some background ooo’s and whoa-oh-whoa’s, Weezer sounds eerily familiar to the Rubber Soul era Beatles (beep beep, beep beep, yeah!). In fact, the entire album does have a Beatles kind of feel to it as most of their songs are about girls and all of those feelings associated with girls. They do have their stand-alone single, Hash Pipe, which has no mention of girls just like The Beatles had Nowhere Man. Okay, okay; I’ll stop with the comparisons.

The fact remains that one listen is not enough, neither is two and neither is three. The Green Album is a disc that does not bore, it does not lull and it does not tire in its musical efforts to please. From the top to the bottom, each song, although they’re all related by the Weezer sound, are distinct and unique. Maybe it’s Rivers Cuomo’s high tone of voice, maybe it’s their peppy guitar chords and maybe, just maybe, it’s the happy lyrics, but it’s one fun album. For the car, for doing homework, for simple listening pleasure, you get about 3 loops of Weezer in one hour! Why is that important? Well, it’s weezerific of course!
