Cousy's Music Reviews- Vinyl Kings- A Little Trip

October 2005

ALBUM: A Little Trip
ARTIST: Vinyl Kings
LABEL: Independent- 2002
RATING: 7.5 out of 10

A Little Trip is a journey down memory lane to a time in music when rock & roll was still a fresh sound on the radio and four lads from Liverpool were about to set the world ablaze with their infectious combination of pop melodies/harmonies and guitar-rock music. Yep, this is a tribute album to the Beatles with a huge twist. There are no cover songs of Beatle-written tracks. Instead, there are 13 original songs inspired or influenced by The Beatles’ repertoire of the 1960’s. And boy do these gentlemen hit the hammer right on the nail. Mind you, the songs don’t really match up to the Fab Four’s hits but I think that’s to be expected. They’re not trying to produce the best rock album in the world but they try and succeed in capturing an accurate Beatle-sound, complete with beautiful harmonies, Harrison-like guitar work and replicating Lennon/McCartney song structures. Stand-out tracks include Here We Go Again and I Think I Know, 2-minute songs that pack a poppy punch and an excellent melody. Songs like A Little Trip and Chocolate Cake aren’t bad songs, they have good parts but, overall, they border on being corny or flat. As well, there are different lead singers depending on the song and the album covers the entire scope of Beatles influences from carnival atmosphere pop (Bang Bang) to light-hearted acoustic attempts (Mother Dear) to string-swaying ballads (Dreams) to straight-forward rockers (Don’t Worry About Me). A Little Trip is not just a little piece of the 60’s thrown into the new millennium, it’s a lot of fun!
