Cousy's Music Reviews- Modest Mouse- The Moon & Antarctica

October 2005

ALBUM: The Moon & Antarctica
ARTIST: Modest Mouse
LABEL: Epic- 2000
RATING: 8.75 out of 10

Besides having one of my favourite songs of all-time residing insides its musical framework, The Moon & Antarctica is I’m pretty sure it’s not an outright concept album but there’s a definite flow to the songs because they connect together in musical form pretty well. And, for the most part, none of these songs really stand out as “singles” or definite pop tunes; they all join together into a sort of spoken-word/odd-melody lyrical flow, backed by moments of harshness and calmness all played by distorted guitars. My normal method of sorting out songs on an album is a little skewed with this one though because I’m quite sure most of these tracks wouldn’t be “hits” or “#1’s. But I use my categories, instead, to give you an idea of which songs stand out given their lyrical prettiness or their combined melodic/rhythmic catchiness.

HOME RUNS:
3rd Planet, Gravity Rides Everything, Dark Center Of The Universe, Perfect Disguise, The Stars Are Projectors, Paper Thin Walls, Lives
HITS: A Different City, The Cold Part, Alone Down There, Wild Packs of Family Dogs, Life Like Weeds
FOULS: Tiny Cities Made of Ashes, I Came As A Rat, What People Are Made Of
OUTS: none.
