So P. Diddy has
spent the past few months of his life producing the 'street' version of the hit
TV show which brought us O-Town...'Making The Band'. The obvious question
on everyone's lips is WHY?
Already
a multi-millionaire (the 12th richest man under 40 in the U.S, P. Diddy is
obviously looking to expand his fortune. Masking this 'band' as a harem of
talent which he discovered is unacceptable to the Hip Hop nation.
There are
countless rappers in the game at the moment who have struggled for many years to
make it. Many very talented rappers, such as Pharoahe Monch and Talib
Kweli are the true stars who deserve to be praised, but often shun the
limelight.
The fact that this
new band is 'street' does nothing more for its image...it is simply Black Pop
Idol dressed up in P. Diddy's long-lost charm and respect. Once a highly
respected producer and entrepreneur, Diddy seems to be clutching at straws to
again seek recognition, following the death of Biggie Smalls and the departure
of his golden acts, Ma$e and The Lox in recent years.
Some may argue
that Making The Band is a great opportunity for talented kids to shine and seek
otherwise unavailable opportunities. However I feel that it is tacky and
defies Hip-Hop protocol, of shipping your demos around as many labels and
producers as possible, and putting in some real work.
