Healing Alternatives: Ask Pam

GABA, SAM-e & Schizoaffective

1-06-04
Dear Pam,

Q. Pam,

I have heard that sam-e and gaba help with us with schizoaffective, Can you tell me how they help? any information would be appreciated.
Thanks, Jesse

A. GABA tells the neurons in the brain to slow down or stop firing, so it calms and tranquilizes. It is helpful in the manic phase of bipolar and helps to calm anxiety. Some people find it is a good sleep aid.

SAM-e (pronounced “sammy”) boosts the brain’s production of serotonin, which is vital for mood stabilization and the body’s stress-response. SSRI’s like Prozac help the brain to keep using the serotonin which is available but doesn’t actually help it produce more. SAM-e is particularly helpful for depression. SAM-e can be quite expensive, TMG is a precursor that appears to do the same thing but is much cheaper.
