Q.
I need to know about natural ways to reduce anxiety without making me tired. All medications that my dr prescribes to me make me sleepy. Is there something over the counter and herbal I can use? I would prefer pill form over tea. Thanks, Andy.
A.
Most supplements that help to reduce anxiety can also
cause sleepiness. As always, be careful of the
supplements that you take, make sure you know their
side effects and contraindications. Some that may (or
may not) make you sleepy are:
St. John's wort (don't take with SAM-e, TMG, or 5-htp)
Kava Kava (may cause liver damage, also don't take
with Xanax)
Some supplements or nutrients that do not appear to
have sleepiness as a side effect are:
SAM-e or TMG
Nutrients to take regularly to combat anxiety and
panic:
magnesium and calcium
Also, try some stress reduction techniques such as
visualization, progressive relaxation, yoga, and
biofeedback. If you are having a panic attack, try
deep breathing and progressive muscle relaxation (you
know, start at your toes and progressively tense and
then relax each part of your body, working towards
your head). If you can, get out of the situation to
go for a brief walk, have a drink of cold water,
listen to soothing music, or do whatever else you need
to in order to calm yourself back down.
