Healing Alternatives: Ask Pam

Grapefruit Contraindications & Metabolism

3-02-04
Dear Pam,

Q. You mentioned that grapefruit juice may interact with certain meds. My daughter has been really craving and eating grapefruit recently. She is taking, effexor er, abilify, geodon and lithobid. Doesn't seem to be having any problems as of yet. Do you know of any interraction w/ grapefruit and those meds? Also, any foods or diet to speed up a metabolism slowed by antipsychotics?
Thanks. Jeanne

A. Jeanne, I found contraindications against taking effexor, abiliify and geodon with grapefruit or grapefruit juice. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist about whether there is a certain time that she may eat grapefruit (eg. Not 2 hours before or 5 hours after meds) or whether she should avoid them altogether.

I would caution against using any herbs or supplements designed to speed up metabolism while on antipsychotics, as they could put her into a manic state. Ideas for speeding up metabolism with diet and lifestyle:

- *always* eat breakfast
- eat something (small meal/snack) every 2-3 hours
- exercise 30 minutes a day
- increase muscle mass
- reduce alcohol and refined sugars

Pam
