Healing Alternatives: Ask Pam

Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome/ECT

9-24-04
Dear Pam,

Q. Our son cannot take psychotropic meds.
They induce "neuroleptic malignant syndrome".

The state mental hospital wants us to consent to ECT.

We believe some of his psychosis was induced by the psychotropic meds.

PLEASE, tell us how to locate a residential facility that will accept him so he can be washed free of psychotropic meds before we decide if ECT should be tried.

Thanks,
Oliver K. Manuel

A. This is not my area of expertise, but I would suggest contacting the Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome Information Service:

http://www.nmsis.org/index.shtml

They have a toll-free hotline 888-667-8367 and could hopefully point you in the right direction.

Pam
