GWGF - Spotlight on Nancy
(Playing ~ "Friends Are Friends Forever")

This page is dedicated to a precious good friend and fellow member
of our "Girls With Grandmother Faces," a group of friends from
our days at Carson-Newman College.

This is also my way of saying "Happy Birthday, Nancy," from all of us as she ushers in Spring
each year on her March 21st birthday! Her birthday on this date is especially fitting as she
has always been the very essence of Spring with her sunshiny, bright, cheerful and bubbly personality.

Nancy is a fellow Chattanoogan, graduating from my high school alma mater, Chattanooga High School,
'though two years behind me. We graduated from Carson-Newman College in the Class of 1952.

During our freshman year, Burnette Dormitory was home to several of us from Chattanooga,
including Nancy. Her roommates were Margie (Raines) Duncan and Marie (Magill) Walls.
The second year many of us moved to Henderson Dorm where Nancy roomed with Charlotte (Hicks) Brunson
for the next two years. Wanda (Saylor) Palmer was Nancy's roommate during our senior year. She was
the only girl I recall who burst into the communal bathroom on our floor every morning
with a cheery "Good Morning" for everyone! Remember, girls?!

Nancy shared many activities and interests with her friends, our group now known as
"Girls With Grandmother Faces." Among these activities were the A Cappella Choir, BSU, YWA,
Women's Student Government, Der Deutsche Verein, W. Powell Hale Players (she was in the cast
for "The Heiress," among other productions), Modern Portia (for English majors who qualified) and
the Hypatian Literary Society. One special "love" was German, taught by Prof. Carey S. Crantford,
of course! She and Charlotte used to sit on the dorm steps to study German, and it is reported
that Nancy would utter almost on a daily basis: "Ach du lieber!"

Nancy and I shared such a fun time in the home of a young couple, Betty and Charles, in Baton Rouge
on an A Cappella Choir tour. Nancy, remember the coffee that Betty served to us in bed that was
so strong we felt it could have walked away on its own!! And then, there was that fabulous night
in DeFuniak Springs with Ann's mama, Mrs. Weed. (In 1953, Nancy rode Greyhound all the way
to DeFuniak Springs to serve as Ann's maid of honor when Ann married Harrell Cushing.)

Nancy's all-time fascination was Ralph Voris, who graduated in the Class of 1949. Once she met Ralph,
no one else really mattered! She was intrigued by his quietness ("still waters run deep," so said she),
his talents at the piano and his mathematical abilities. The fascination has never left. Ralph is still
Nancy's Knight, complete with White Horse, and she is still the damsel by his side!!

Many of us over the years were the recipients of Nancy's unique post cards. She could always manage
to find a small picture depicting an event, a holiday or a feeling she wanted to convey, paste it
up in a corner, and then write more on that post card than one could imagine! Oftimes she would use
Ralph's own note card creations, of which she was justly proud. They had a great many happy years at their lovely home in Atlanta, and Nancy was always so pleased for everyone to see her beautiful azaleas each year.

Nancy has always been a loyal and special friend to so many of us. Recently, she and Ralph have been in an assisted living facility so she is no longer able to be with us at Carson-Newman Homecomings and other times. How we do miss being with both of them!

Thank you, Nancy, for being such a loving, special friend.
You are always in our hearts, our thoughts and our prayers.
We all love you !!

* We deeply regret to report that Nancy's beloved husband Ralph died on November 28, 2004.
They had been married for 51 years.

"The Lord Bless You and Keep You."
