In Memory of Rolly (2003)

Spring starts off a new life, while winter closes the eyes of those who lived well. Kitten of Princess, Rolly was a great kitty with a very unique personality (as all cats do). This kitten was a lover of food. I remember one Thanksgiving when we gave the cats the carcass, he ate so much that his little belly stuck out the sides and all he could do was waddle contently with his little grin blastered over his face. Though, this is not where his name had come from. Rolly loved to roll around on the ground all the time. As he grew older, this was basically the only motion he ever really executed. Mostly this was in order to get his belly scratched. Rolly was also one of the few cats that would like to sit in my lap on a cold day and just purr away. This grew to be a bit tough when the cat was almost bigger than my lap when he was older.

This is a younger image of Rolly sitting in his favorite spot in the fall and spring times. In the winter he would retreat into the warmth of the window wells that were up against the house.

Another picture of little Rolly. He is approximately a year old in this picture. Was a sheepish kitten, in that he was cautious about everything.

One of the two adjectives that described Rolly is illustrated somewhat in this picture. Rolly was a very long cat. Stretched out he could easily fit the length of the doorway and that was not including legs and tail.

The second adjective was lazy. The cat never moved unless he absolutely had to when he was older. He laid down to eat and to sharpen his claws. But if you were lucky enough you could see him actually walk a few feet. Though, if kitty treats were involved, he did trot quickly toward you squeaking away (such a strange noise from a big cat).

The most recent picture that I have of Rolly, and one that scanned far better than any of the others. This one was taken in the summer of 2003. Rolly was a unique male in that he loved kittens. We called him the uncle as the kittens loved to crawl all over 'Uncle Rolly'. They'd even fall asleep on him, at least 4 or 5 at a time. Rolly would just bear with it and lay there, most often sleeping while the kittens did this. This could also be because he was too lazy to move, but I think he really did like kittens. Sadly I never got any pictures of this as the kittens would wake up when I tried to take their picture (and as kittens go, they move the entire length of their awake period).

Rolly has always been a part of the herd. Although I use the herd term loosely in that it encompasses all of my cats. Rolly truely is a part of the 8 cat herd. Sarabi, Princess (2001), Koko, Jane, Athena, Zues, Rolly and Spunky Lady will always be 'The Herd'.

The Rainbow Bridge

"Just this side of Heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food and water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable. All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing: they miss someone very special to them; who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. The bright eyes are intent; the eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to break away from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster. YOU have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.
Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together......." --Anonymous

We'll miss you Rolly
