My art students hard at work!
More photos of my art students in all of their glory...
This is the 10th standard class (only boys, by chance) that I worked with, who eventually submitted a stunning portable mural to the People to People International Youth Mural Contest, based in the USA, and won first prize in their division (I'll post a photo of it when I get a chance).
A collage of some of the kids I worked with while in Gujarat...their faces are truly an expression of the divine being that created them.
This is the large mural that I designed and organized the painting of in Gujarat, India in July/August 2004, as part of the "Singing Tree" project based in the USA. Over 400 children at the NGO-managed school where I worked contributed their small paintings (the leaves). It will be hung in the girls dorm in the study hall for them to enjoy once the new building is completed. The heart-shaped tree leaves were inspired by the Indian "people" tree, which is a very old, native tree found in most villages, where the elders and other villagers sit to socialize and rest from the hot sun. It is a place where people come together, much like what happened when this mural was created!
Another close up view of the base of the "People Tree." The earth is a collage of many small fragments of paintings. As each square-shaped painting was trimmed into a heart, many pieces were left over, which soon became countries and continents!
