Selena was a member of a feral colony that was living at a local airport. She was missing the lower part of her back right leg. There was another kitten there that was also a tripod and we were told that the airport people had been spraying the area with pesticides for years. I'm not an expert but, it would stand to reason that prolonged exposure to pesticides might contribute to birth defects.

Volunteers with the local humane group and I spent 12 weeks haunting this airport after dark trying to catch these kittens. I will never forget the sound of Amanda's 'southern' twang ringing out with, "Here kitty, kitty, kitty." as long as I live! It so annoyed the cats I finally told her to get on one side of the hanger and call them so they would all run to my side and I could catch them! Spending all those summer nights chasing cats was certainly a bonding experience for all of us!

Our intentions were to remove the weened kittens for placement and to spay/neuter the older ones and re-release them. They had a caretaker so food and shelter was not a problem, but these 2 tripods would have a hard time growing up in a feral colony. We were never able to capture the other one but, we did finally get our hands on Selena! She settled right into the home environment but we soon realized that her stump was going to be a problem. Because it was almost the whole upper half of her leg she would occassionally knock it against something when trying to manuver. It was apparent that when she did this it was painful. So, we decided to have the remainder of the leg removed.

It turned out to be the very best solution. Selena gets around just fine on three legs. All the other cats accept her and she has become quite affectionate. Selena is a beautiful little girl and she is patiently awaiting that special lifetime home! Please e-mail me or fill out my adoption application if you would like to adopt Selena.
