Prairie Farms of 1918

Martin, Melvin (Elsie A. Bushnell) Ch: Carl D; "Spring Valley Farm, Eldred, Route Bluffdale, Sec 33 George Vaible (1893) Illinois Carrollton.

Melvin went by the name of "Bud". Everyone assumed it was a nickname. However in doing the research it was found that his real name was Bud Melvin Martin.
His grand kids called him Granddad.
He  chewed a plug tobacco all his life.
Melvin owned 80 acres of Bluff land south of Eldred and 30 acres below the Bluffs.
 He farmed for many years.
He and Elsie lived on the 80 acres until their deaths.
When he and Elsie were first married, they lived in the town of Eldred, next to the store his dad owned.
After his death, Carl and Robert, his sons sold the land.
"Bud" was a very likeable, pleasant and wise man.
 He didn't like change.
He was hard of hearing and would always have the radio volume turned up all the way.
In the latter part of his life he did have a TV.
His meal three times a day was the same. It was poached eggs, boiled potatoes, Karo syrup and bread and coffee. He would take boiling water and pour in coffee grounds that were in a paper towel (he wouldn't own a coffee pot). Upon his death hundreds of Karo syrup cans were found in the house.
Melvin only had a sixth grade education, but was brilliant at mental arithmetic.
He always printed with a pencil. He even signed his checks with a pencil.
He farmed with horses and would not use a tractor.
He would drive horses in a spring wagon down the blacktop to Eldred.
He always wore bib overalls and carried a pocket watch tied to his bibs with a shoestring.
He would start every sentence with a "By ned".
The Martins were one of the first families to get indoor plumbing.
Granddad was the checker's champion of several counties. Although he only had a sixth grade education, he was brilliant at mental arithmetic.

Notes for ELSIE BUSHNELL:

Elsie studied at the Strassberger Conservatory of Music in St. Louis, Missouri.
She was a terrific cook and baker.
Elsie had an incredible green thumb and had all sorts of indoor and outdoor plants. Gardening was perhaps her greatest love after music.
She had bright red hair
Elsie was a great piano player. She played for numerous weddings and funerals at her church.
