JOHN4 MARTIN (EBINEZER3, JOHN2 MARTYN/MARTIN, EDWARD1 MARTYN) was born 1718, and died December 8, 1801. He married MARY REED June 10, 1741 in Barrington.

Notes for JOHN MARTIN:

Capt. Martin served his country in the Revolutionary War. He enlisted for fifteen months in Capt. Thomas Carlisle's Company, Col. Robert Elliott's Regiment. He bought the interests in the homestead and built a new home near the end of Central Bridge.

      Served in the Revolutionary War under Capt. Thomas Allen's Co.

5.   BENJAMIN MARTIN, b. March 23, 1755.

BENJAMIN5 MARTIN (JOHN4, EBINEZER3, JOHN2 MARTYN/MARTIN, EDWARD1 MARTYN) was born March 23, 1755, Warren, now Barrington, RI, d November 26, 1836 He married SARAH REED March 31, 1782.

Notes for BENJAMIN MARTIN:

In December 1776, he was a member of Captain ThomasAllen's company of Barrington militia. He was stationed at Nayatt and Rumstick Point on the shores of Narragansett Bay. He remained stationed there until the British withdrew from Newport. His company was detailed under the command of Lieutenant Kinnicut and joined with  General Sullivan's company. .

SAMUEL REED6 MARTIN (BENJAMIN5, JOHN4, EBINEZER3, JOHN2 MARTYN/MARTIN, EDWARD1 MARTYN) was born November 15, 1782 in Barrington, RI., d. August 28, 1840.  He married SALLY BOWEN October 2, 1814 in Barrington, RI.

Notes for SAMUEL REED MARTIN:

He served as captain as his father had before him in the State militia and was one of the leading and prominent men of the town.  He was a member of the town council and represented Barrington in the General Assembly of Rhode Island.

Generation No. 7

BENJAMIN7 MARTIN (SAMUEL REED6, BENJAMIN5, JOHN4, EBINEZER3, JOHN2 MARTYN/MARTIN, EDWARD1 MARTYN) was born August 28, 1815, d. December 12, 1895 in Barrington, RI. He married JULIA R. DROWN June 22, 1837.

Benjamin served as captain in the old State militia. When only twenty-five years of age, he was chosen a member of the Barrington town council serving for 30 or more years. For a number of years he was the assessor of taxes for the town and was also a member of the school committee. He was elected a member of  the General Assembly of Rhode Island from his town in 1854 and was chosen senator in 1855 and 1862. He was a member of the Congregational Church, which he joined in 1856 and was a deacon from about 1860 up to the time of his death.

JOSEPH BOWEN7 MARTIN (SAMUEL REED6, BENJAMIN5, JOHN4, EBINEZER3, JOHN2 MARTYN/MARTIN, EDWARD1 MARTYN) was born April 28, 1823., d. April 1, 1903 He married MARY A. DROWN April 15, 1847.

 

Notes for JOSEPH BOWEN MARTIN:
He was a farmer by occupation. He inherited a part of the old homestead having the house built by Capt. John, which was afterward sold, he and his brother Benjamin building other houses on a part of the old farm, in which they passed the balance of their lives.  Mr. Martin was an active man in his community, was a member of the twon council of Barrington in 1860 and 1861, for several years was the assessor of taxes in Barrington and also served the twon in the capacity of surveyor of highways.  Back in the stormy days of 1842, when the State of Rhode Island was engaged in the "Dorr War", Mr. Martin was on the side of the law and order party, and with his company marched to the scene of action.  He was always an attendant of the Congregational Church.

CHARLES ELORY/ELLERY8 MARTIN (BENJAMIN7, SAMUEL REED6, BENJAMIN5, JOHN4, EBINEZER3, JOHN2 MARTYN/MARTIN, EDWARD1 MARTYN) was born February 27, 1838.

Twin Daughters  of CHARLES ELORY/ELLERY MARTIN:

2.  GRACE MARTIN, m. WILLIAM A. MATHEWSON.

SAMUEL REED8 MARTIN (BENJAMIN7, SAMUEL REED6, BENJAMIN5, JOHN4, EBINEZER3, JOHN2 MARTYN/MARTIN, EDWARD1 MARTYN) was born July 4, 1842.

Children of SAMUEL REED MARTIN:

1.  IDA9 MARTIN, married Thomas bowden

2.  LOUISE MARTIN.

 

SARAH ELIZABETH8 MARTIN (BENJAMIN7, SAMUEL REED6, BENJAMIN5, JOHN4, EBINEZER3, JOHN2 MARTYN/MARTIN, EDWARD1 MARTYN) was born April 18, 1844. She married JAMES SWEETLAND.

Children of SARAH MARTIN and JAMES SWEETLAND:

1.  EDWARD R.9 SWEETLAND., a cclergyman

3.  SARAH ANN SWEETLAND, m. Nathaniel P. Briggs

 

 

HENRY ARVIN8 MARTIN (JOSEPH B.7, SAMUEL REED6, BENJAMIN5, JOHN4, EBINEZER3, JOHN2 MARTYN/MARTIN, EDWARD1 MARTYN) was born in 1856. He married Iva Elizabeth Andrews of Phenix, RI on March, 1910.

ELIZABETH ANDREWS9 MARTIN (HENRY A.8JOSEPH B.7, SAMUEL REED6, BENJAMIN5, JOHN4, EBINEZER3, JOHN2 MARTYN/MARTIN, EDWARD1 MARTYN) was born August 5, 1911, d. November 17, 1974.  She married William Albert Chace Norman, August 3, 1940 in Barrington, RI
