 RHODA COFER3 HAM (JOHN COFER2, STEPHEN1) was born November 22, 1820 in Callaway County, MO, and died November 5, 1881 in Camp Point, Adams County, Illinois. She married (1) SAMUEL SMITH June 23, 1832 in Adams County, Illinois, son of JOHN SMITH and JANE. She married (2) MATTHEW KEMP October 1857.  Burial: Evergreen Cemetery, Section IV, Row 25

"1879 History of Adams County, Illinois" Kemp, Rhoda C., resident of Camp Poin, is the third child of John and Elizabeth Ham. When she was 10 yrs of age she with her parents moved to Adams County and settled near Quincy. A few years later they settled near Columbus where she was married to Samuel Smith. Her 2nd husband Matthew Kemp was born in Ireland.
After marrying Matthew they moved to Concord Township where they lived ten years. From there they went to Iowa and lived there until Matthew's death in 1870 in Jackson Township, Keokuck County, Iowa. She remained there for several more years. She returned to Camp Point in 1875. Mrs. Smith ows a residence and a lot in Camp Point and a farm in Iowa.

 STEPHEN HENRY4 KEMP (RHODA COFER3 HAM, JOHN COFER2, STEPHEN1) was born January 20, 1860 in Camp Point, Illinois, and died May 30, 1949 in St. Joseph, Buchanan Missouri. He married (1) ANNA ROSS September 4, 1882 in Carthange, Hancock County, Illinois. He married (2) LILLIAN EPPERSON December 24, 1889 in Methodist Episcopal Church, Skidmore, MO.

Notes for STEPHEN HENRY KEMP:

Stephen Kemp helped his dad on the farm until his dad died in 1870. In 1875 he moved from Iowa back to Camp Point, Illinois where he secured a position with the publisher of the Camp Point Journal, who was also the postmaster and book and stationery store in town. In 1879 he contracted pneumonia and was sent to Pawnee City, Nebraska to recuperate. After that he returned to Camp Point and worked in a dry goods store until he married Anna Ross. After marrying Lillian in 1889 he secured a bank position the next week and continued in banking until 1924 when he was severely burned by an explosion of a kerosene heater.
