MARTIN VAN BUREN3 HAM (JABEZ2, STEPHEN1)1 was born September 19, 1840 in Callaway County, MO, and died March 15, 1903 in Bourbon County, Kansas2. He married SARAH MARTHA HOLLIS December 13, 1866 in Pike County, Illinois3.

Martin was a Confederate soldier of Missouri and was a private in Company A East's Missouri Infantry. (Information from the Clayton Library, Houston Texas August 11, 1981 from Nellie C. WIlliams, Bloomfield, Missouri).

 

The "Ham Family Farm" is east of Porterville, KS. Martin received 160 acres because of military service and he had his own 160 acres for a total of 320 acres. He had 18 hired hands. Martin's daughters attended a college in Fort Scott, KS. Jane married a hired hand and Hannah Armninta also married one named Charles Sheppard. " per Marjorie Howard 1999, descendant of Martin Van Buren Ham.

Listed in the 1860 St. Clair County, Census living with his mother and his brother Stephen's family.

Biographical Sketches of Walnut Township, Bourbon County, KS

M.V. Ham, farmer, Setion 32 is a native of Calloway County, MO born in 1840, he was raised on a farm and received his education there. In 1857 he moved to St. Clair County, MO. In 1861 he enlisted and served till 1865; he then went to Illinois where he engaged in farming. In 1867 he married Miss Hollis of Pike County, IL. In 1872 he came to Kansas and located on Section 5 starting in stock; he is now giving more attention to that line than to grain farming; at present he owns 610 acres of land of which 125 are cultivated; having good crops with the exception of that section injured by the hail-storm that passed here this spring. They have a family of 9 children, two boys and seven girls. Mr. Ham joined the Masonic order in 1862; he has never been in public office, not having cared for it.

The Martin Van Buren Ham family bible lists David Vanburen's birth as March 27, 1882. However his tombstone reflects the date May 15, 1880 as his birth. I have used the tombstone date.

9.  LEWIS STEPHEN HAM, b. March 27, 1882; d. March 1, 1883, Kansas4.

10.  IDA BELL HAM, b. October 1, 1884.
