Fishing Planet Earth An Angler's Guide To Fishing The World's Trophy Hot Spots | |||||||||
Fishing Catalina Island California Catalina Island, California, USA Record Kelp Bass and Giant Sea Bass "Catalina offers a very diverse fishery with something to excite anglers of all ages and skill levels. Many young visitors have caught their first feisty Calico Bass off the Green Pleasure Pier, or their first Mackerel or Sand Bass while casting out from the mole. A rental skiff can transform the land-bound and bring them into the range of Halibut and the toothy but tasty Barracuda. Catalina's many coves, beaches, reefs and drop-offs bring Yellowtail and White Sea Bass in search of the Mackerel, Sardines and Smelt that are plentiful around the Island. It is not unusual to see a smiling fisherman with a 30 pound Yellowtail or Sea Bass as big as 50 pounds being taken from Catalina's waters. Now that would make for a great fish fry! Catalina Island has long been considered the birthplace of big game fishing. Catalina hosts the Tuna Club where members adhere to a very strict set of rules regarding the line, the gear and the target species. Many of the old photos show the abundance of marine life surrounding the Island, and if you have the temperament, there are Charters and Guides ready to help you fish for a trophy. There is no closer departure point for reaching the big game than from Avalon. Marlin are caught every Summer, often within a few miles of the Harbor. A tuna charter can get you and 5 friends into Albacore and Yellowfin Tuna during the Spring and Summer months. For the very adventurous, a night charter can be arranged to target Mako Shark and the king of the Sea, the Swordfish.
