"Not much more than a shallow, silted-in slough off the Ocmulgee River today, Montgomery Lake is hallowed ground. In 1932, these waters produced the world-record largemouth bass, and although many have tried, the record remains unbroken. In all of freshwater fishing, no goal is pursued as vigorously as breaking the largemouth bass world-record weight of 22 pounds, 4 ounces. No one has been able to best the achievement of George W. Perry, a 19-year-old Georgia farm boy. On a June day in 1932, George Perry and his partner, Jack E. Page, fished from a 14-foot boat handmade from 75 cents worth of material. After a fruitless day of casting his one and only lure, a perch-pattern Creek Chub Wiggle-Fish, George Perry’s fortunes changed. With a snap of the wrist he sent the Wiggle-Fish up next to a cypress log, and angling history was made. The monster fish weighed 22 pounds and 4 ounces, besting the previous world record by more than 2 pounds. The record bass was 32.5 inches long and 28.5 inches in girth. Although it is estimated the next world-record bass will be worth a $1 million in endorsements to the lucky angler who catches it, fame and fortune was far from George Perry’s mind on June 2, 1932. When Perry went to a country store in Helena to weigh his huge fish, someone mentioned that Field and Stream magazine was sponsoring a national fishing contest. The fish was weighed on certified scales and was the winning entry in the contest. For winning the contest George Perry received $75 worth of merchandise, including a new rod and reel. After the fish was weighed and measured, it was taken home, cleaned, and eaten by the Perry family. Although Montgomery Lake is in effect gone as a fishing hole, it is still there for the angler to see and envision a young Georgia farm boy standing the angling world on its ear.
