In 1875, w 2 CONC hen Ernest was just 7 years of age, his mother, Jane (Haldenby) Keddy died. In the same year 2 CONC , Ernest's infant brother William also died. Ernest's 2 CONT paternal Aunt Grace came to live with the family to care for the three remaining children. 2 CONT 2 CONT As a young man Ernest worked in Hemmingford for his father farming and raising livestock 2 CONC . He was competing in area agricultural shows and in 1891 won several prizes including 2nd pr 2 CONC ize for best pair of ducks and 3rd prize for best collection 2 CONT of vegetables. 2 CONT 2 CONT Ernest married Mabel Glass in 1901 after a courtship of less than a year. She was a youn 2 CONC g school teacher from Roxham. Together they would have three children, all born in Hemmingfor 2 CONC d. 2 CONT 2 CONT In 1910 Ernest went out west with his cousin, Issac Keddy and bought a 320 acre section o 2 CONC f land just outside of Rosthern, Saskatchewan in the Friedensfeld School District. He sold hi 2 CONC s Hemmingford farm to another cousin, Herbie Keddy. His 2 CONT wife and children remained in the farmhouse in Quebec until the spring of 1911, when they joi 2 CONC ned him in the west. 2 CONT 2 CONT It took several years of hard work to develop the land and rid the soil of menacing wild o 2 CONC ats. In Clifford Keddy's memoirs, he wrote of the conditions the family faced upon arrival 2 CONC : "We had cows, chickens and pigs, providing us with plenty 2 CONT of milk and eggs to eat as well as a supply to trade at the store for groceries. For lunch w 2 CONC e ate bread with black molasses the first year. I remember Uncle Frank sent us a barrel of M 2 CONC acintosh apples the first fall so we had an apple to take 2 CONT with our lunch and a jar of milk to drink. In the winter my father drove us to school and ca 2 CONC me for us at night. We had a buffalo robe to keep us warm in the cutter. We heated a ston 2 CONC e to keep our feet warm. The first year I was six, Clarence 2 CONT was eight and Grace was seven, so we could not walk that far in the winter. Some days it wou 2 CONC ld be as low as forty below, so we had to dress warmly and keep our faces covered. The schoo 2 CONC l was warm except on very cold days. One of the big boys 2 CONT who lived near the school came early to make the fire. They filled the stove with coal the n 2 CONC ight before to keep it warm." 2 CONT 2 CONT Ernest and Mabel both became active in the Friedensfeld school district. In the spring o 2 CONC f 1912 Mabel taught school. Ernest was a school trustee from 1914 until 1918. When Ernest die 2 CONC d in 1918 Mabel was elected to finish out his term. 2 CONT 2 CONT Ernest had tuberculosis for the last years of his life. He struggled with the disease, whi 2 CONC le continuing to work on his farm and see to the family's needs. On the 9th of February 191 2 CONC 8 Ernest Keddy died never truely realizing the eventual 2 CONT success of his farm.1 HEAL Ernest grew up in Roxham and worked for his father farming unti 2 CONC l he married in 1901. He built a house near his fathers residence on 202 around the same time 2 CONC . In 1910 he traveled out west seeking a homestead and eventually settled on 2 CONT Rosthern, Sask. A 2 CONC lthough he never found the mother load, he did return with some gold dust and a sizeable nugg 2 CONC et which became the subject of an interesting family 2 CONT story. It seems that during the return voyage from Australia some men were joking with Willia 2 CONC m about the nugget not being of any value. William proceeded to bite the nugget in half thu 2 CONC s attesting to its softness and apparent purity. Later he 2 CONT made two decorative pins with the halves, giving one to each of his sons. One pin and some go 2 CONC ld dust remain family heirlooms today. 2 CONT 2 CONT In 1867 William married Jane Haldenby in the Methodist Church of Hemmingford. Together the 2 CONC y had four children. When Jane died at the age of 33, William's only surviving sister, Grace 2 CONC , assisted with the care and raising of the children. 2 CONT 2 CONT William was active in community government, school and church. He was elected as a Hemmin 2 CONC gford Municipal Counselor in 1877 and served five three year terms before retiring. He wa 2 CONC s a Hemmingford School Commissioner and School Board Chairman 2 CONT from 1885 to 1895. William was influential in the building of Hemmingford's new model schoo 2 CONC l in 1882. His leadership skills were also applied in nearby Roxham as a Trustee and Secretar 2 CONC y/ Treasurer of the Methodist Church there. 2 CONT 2 CONT William's intellect resulted in his being chosen to execute many of the family's legal mat 2 CONC ters, including the agreement concerning his father's estate and it's dividends. 2 CONT 2 CONT William Keddy died at his home in Hemmingford on the 19th of May 1908.1 HEAL William lik 2 CONC ely grew up on his father's farm in Bogton. At some point during it's gold rush, he travled t 2 CONC o Australia to mine for gold. In the spring of 1799 he married Susannah Holiday in Little Driffield, Yor 2 CONC kshire, England. According to Parish Records, 6 sons and 2 CONT 1 daughter were born to them and christened in Little Driffield. 2 CONT 2 CONT Around 1830 Francis moved with his wife, daughter and three of his sons to Lacolle, Quebec 2 CONC . They brought with them a grandfather clock which was made in Driffield in the late eighteen 2 CONC th century. This clock remains a family heirloom to this 2 CONT day. 2 CONT 2 CONT Having farmed in England for over thirty years, Francis brought valueable experience to La 2 CONC colle. Records show that he eventually settled on Lots 10 and 11 of the 4th Concession. Thi 2 CONC s property was about 224 arpents in size. The Lacolle River 2 CONT ran through the north-west corner. 2 CONT 2 CONT All three of his sons who came to Canada also became farmers. The eldest, who was also na 2 CONC med Francis, appears in a prize list from a Hemmingford agricultural show in 1845 winning 1s 2 CONC t prize for the Cow category. The youngest, Flinton, farmed 2 CONT and was operating a mill in Lacolle by 1851. 2 CONT 2 CONT Records show that by 1850 Francis and Susannah had moved in with son Francis who lived a 2 CONC t that time in Champlain, N.Y. 2 CONT 2 CONT Francis Clarkson died on the first of December 1864.
