Richard Foster was christened in the parish of Alford, Lincolnshire, England, the son of William Foster and Elizabeth Bateman. Evidence suggests that Richard with his parents and siblings were first settled on the east side of the Richelieu
River in Clarenceville where Richard's father is buried. Richard Foster married Catherine March at Odelltown in 1846. Catherine was the daughter of Edward March, an Irish born Capt. of Crown forces at the 1838 Battle of Odelltown. Richard's
sister, Ann Foster Maynard, lived near him after the death of her husband and she later removed to Champlain, NY.
