John Keddy was born in Pickering Yorkshire, England, the son of Hemmingford, Quebec settlers Joseph and Hannah (Eddon) Keddy. He was christened on the fourth of August, 1822 in the parish of Pickering. As an infant, John survived the
journey to Canada and the settlement of his family's homestead.In 1851 John was residing in Lacolle, Quebec at Bogton. Also listed in his household was his brother Joseph and sister Grace.
In 1856 John married Christiana McNaughton and together they raised a large family. During the 1860s John shared the responsibilities of the original Keddy lots (97 and 98 in the 3rd range) with his brothers Isaac and Robert.
One prominant member of the John Keddy family was George W. Keddy, who became a Hemmingford Municipal Councilor, a School Commissioner and a trustee of the St. Johns Church in Hallerton.
At the time of his death, John Keddy's estate included lot 811, (28 arpents), and lot 825, (48 arpents) in St. Bernard de Lacolle and lots 4 c (43 acres) and 5a (17 acres) in the fifth range of the Hemmingford Crown Reserves. In addition,
