Dear Blaine

I’m sorry I never got to know you better.
My last memory of you before
you became sick is so vivid.
We were playing air hockey, you with a silly grin on your face and laughing.
You were always laughing.
I try to remember your smile, not the way you looked in that hospital bed.
You were so small and insignificant, bruised face and trembling body,
IV’s like ivy, wound around your limp arms taking root in your fragile skin.
Two weeks never passed so fast...
I wanted to apologize for never having hope.
I never thought you’d make it...
Science has always been stronger than my heart.
I didn’t want you to go; I just knew that you couldn’t stay.
Nine years just wasn’t long enough.
There was so much you didn’t get to see; so much I didn’t get to see in you.
But what has happened, has happened, -
And I’m left with my memories, which I find are few, but so very important.
I wish I had the chance... I wish I got to know you better.
