A HEALED MIND
(Sonnet 11)
for Bipolar Friends

Begin the day with hope and joy to spare
Insipid darkness soon envelops me
Pretending all is well is hard to bear
Or hiding all the shifts so no one sees

Loud crying deep inside that none can hear
Alone and anxious hours my day to fill
Revealing all to experts who are near
Described as "Rapid Cycler," never still

I leap into the pool of remedies
Such hope that soon I'll live a level life
Each step I take a fuller joy to seize
A heart of trust and prayers to end this strife

Soon I will cope with this condition given
Expecting a healed mind when I'm in Heaven

In 2005 I underwent three back surgeries within two months and spent many recuperative hours unable to walk. I began putting my thoughts into verse as a means of keeping my mind active. Writing poetry evolved into a powerful outlet for working out my deepest questions and emotions. Family members, friends, and I, myself, suffer from bipolar disease. Read down the left margin of this poem and you will see that the first letters of each line spell "bipolar disease." I hope that this sonnet assures other bipolar patients and their supporters that there are people who understand.
