Mithila, also known as Videh   has its boundary defined in Brihat Vishnu Puran (5th century A.D.) as : Gandaki in West, Kaushiki in East, Himalayas in North and Ganges in South. Since this region is interspersed with fifteen rivers, hence it is also known as Tirbhukti i.e., the land on the bank of rivers. The people residing in this region are called Maithils and their language is Maithili. According to Sir John Abraham Grierson (1881-82) : "It is a country with its own tradition, its own poets and its own pride in everything belonging to itself."
