Welcome to the Virginia & Truckee Railroad page of Nevada Rails. The Virginia & Truckee was started with only 3 locomotives on short track, but soon grew into a railroad with 29 locomotives and extending from Reno, Nevada to Minden, Nevada, and became knowh as Queen of the Short Lines.
Restoration History
The Virginia & Truckee Railroad is now mostly gone, except the Carson City area and the Virginia City areas. Those two cities plan to connect with each other over the orignal route.
Tracks
The currently operating tracks are in Virginia City and Carson City. The Virginia City tracks were from the former Southern Pacific (now Union Pacific) Sparks yard, then trucked to Virginia City where the construction took place and where the tracks now are. The Virginia City section wanted to follow the orignal route, but could not because of changes the state had made to the landscape, however they did come very close. And this has been safe and effective.
The Carson City area surrounds the Nevada State Railroad Mesuem in a large loop large enough to allow some swithing, acess to the annex (Carson Mesume Roundhouse), to the interior of the mesueme it's self, and for a good run for any of the equipment. There is also a spur of track that is more than large enough to allow storage of some equipment. The turntable is located in front of the annex, the station and water stand are located on a switch of track to allow trains to come in and out without obstructing the track in front and in back of the train at the station.
Locomotives
As most people know this railroad did consider using diesel locomotives, but chose not to, and used it's steam locomotives to the end. The Virginia & Truckee had only 29 locomotives in it's roster, most were built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works, one was built by the Central Pacific Railroad. The chart below explains the current preserved locomotive roster.
