"Queer as Folk may be trash -- but it’s our trash," says David Hockin, in his review of the Third Season DVDs. "Until a few years ago, queer soap fans have had to content themselves with mostly straight narratives that featured the occasional gay story arc. Oh, how times have changed. The third season of 'Queer As Folk' has hit DVD, and it’s a dishy, glamorized look at the lives of a small group of attractive, fashion-conscious gays and lesbians as they deal with current social issues and romantic complications. Realistic? No. Entertaining? Wildly. ... The real strength of 'Queer as Folk' is not its depiction of a realistic or even believable gay culture, but in its brave attempt to give gay viewers a soap to call our own. When Brian says with a sneer in one episode 'What’s the matter -- haven’t you ever seen two guys fucking?' Well, thanks to Showtime and 'Queer As Folk,' we have." [Read the full article.]

Here are a couple of excerpts from an interesting article written by Hemal Jhaveri which questions whether current gay-themed programming is effective in changing society's perceptions of homosexuals:

"The social taboo that exists between same sex couples kissing or showing any kind of physical affection towards each other is so strong that it’s presented a somewhat warped perspective on homosexuality. The current line of programming seems to suggest that gay men are only different from heterosexual men in that they have a better sense of style and a better sense of humor. While acts of lesbian sexuality have held a more accepted and erotic image in the sexual mythology of American culture, there still exist strong social taboos surrounding men kissing other men. Showtime’s Queer as Folk, a series about a group of gay men, can be intimidating with its aggressive sexuality, but the explicit portrayals present an honest look at the characters lives, one that viewers aren’t always comfortable with."  ...  "The number of gay themed programs and gay characters on television continues to grow, but how effective they are at changing and challenging long-held stereotypes is debatable. The problem now isn’t one of exposure, but of seeing more complicated and varying depictions of gay men and women." [read more]

The 24th Annual American Film Market is a premiere market for the business of motion picture production and distribution. For eight days, from February 25th to March 3, 2004, the AFM will see more than 300 motion picture companies and 7,000 film executives, who are pursuing the business of film. Hundreds of projects are financed, packaged, licensed and greenlit, sealing over half a billion dollars in business for both completed films and those in pre-production. Yesterday, the Echelon Entertainment Press Conference for "Wake" was held at the Loews Santa Monica Beach Hotel (some pictures have been posted to wireimage.com. To read more about the film, which features Gale Harold as Kyle Riven, visit the Echelon Entertainment site, select "catalogue" from the left-hand menu, then select "new films". Choose "Drama" from the drop-down menu, and scroll down until you see Wake. The synopsis:

Sebastian (Oscar Winner Martin Landau) sits hunched over a typewriter, typing out his demons. As he types, we're transported to a time he has suppressed. A time when, after years of separation, he and his three brothers reunite. As their mother lies motionless upstairs, two sets of brothers with two opposing plans collide: one plan, to end their mother's suffering, the other, a search for their father's insurance money.
Kyle ("Queer as Folk's" Gale Harold), the youngest brother, grapples with his sanity and Sebastian's deadly plan as their two brothers Raymond, an escaped convict ("General Hospital's" Blake Gibbons) and his sidekick Jack (John Winthrop Philbrick) descend upon the house with party girls (Dusty Paik and Rainer Judd), guns and booze. Buttons are pushed, substances get abused and plans go awry leading, ultimately, to complete chaos.
At the peak of this emotionally raw and darkly humorous evening, the games start ti intensify and become real. Kyle turns the tables on Raymond and Jack, beating them at their own game if only for a moment. But it may be too late.
What brings them all back otgether will tear them apart as this dysfunctional family reunion turns into a wake shaking the survivors to the core.
"Wake," the writing and directorial debut of Henry LeRoy Finch, is a performance vehicle in the literary spirit of the great American playwrites: O'Neill, Albee, and Shepard. Shot entirely on location in and around Bath, Maine, in a house that was originally built in 1745, the film has a visual authenticity that is palpable. The closely-knit relationships forged by Finch and the ensemble of actors while rehearsing and filming the movie results in deep, exposive performances and skyrocketing onscreen tension.
The 2003 1st Annual Queens International Film Festival gave its Queens Spirit Award for Best Director to Henry LeRoy Finch "for his outstanding direction" and it's Best Actor award to Blake Gibbons.

From Boston.com comes the article, "Lunch with Peter and drinks with Joan":
Actor
Peter Paige, who plays Emmett on "Queer as Folk," knows how to work a crowd. For the live auction at the Theater Offensive's 15th annual fund-raiser, "ClimActs! -- A Bacchanalian Carnaval Gala," on Saturday, Paige jumped down from the stage and egged on bidders vying to have lunch with him. Actually, the prize package included brunch for four at Club Cafe, the soon-to-be-released "Queer as Folk" DVD, and the chance to be first in line March 6 when the DVD's released at Borders in Downtown Crossing. Incidentally, first in line also means first to meet "Queer as Folk" cast members Gale Harold (Brian), Michelle Clunie (Melanie), and Thea Gill (Lindsay), who'll be in Boston for the release. So what did Paige's effort net the Theater Offensive? A cool $4,500. Another of the big draws was a cocktail party for 10 at the home of event chair Joan Parker and her husband, the author Robert B. Parker, which fetched $5,500.

Christine Champagne reviews the new Third Season DVD set at OUT.com:
"The Queer as Folk: The Complete Third Season DVD set is well worth buying simply to own all 14 episodes of what was a thoroughly engaging season—I for one enjoyed seeing even more of Brian’s (Gale Harold) typically well-hidden altruistic side emerge against his will as he practically gave up everything in order to bring down homophobic police chief and wanna-be mayor Jim Stockwell (David Gianopoulos) and save Liberty Avenue’s gay scene from extinction. Meanwhile, I was literally stunned—not to mention dismayed—to see nice guy Ted (Scott Lowell) descend into the world of drug addiction. Like any other QAF fan, I’m dying to know what’s in store for these guys when season 4 kicks off in April, and one of the perks of owning this five-disc DVD set is that it offers a sneak peek at future episodes. All told, the DVD features more than three hours of entertaining extras, including the Wrap Party Reel, which sports exclusive outtakes from a QAF cast party; Hot Summer Days, during which we see how the QAF cast chills during the summer months; Enter Babylon, a behind-the-scenes look at DJ Peter Rauhofer’s Club Babylon tour; and dance floor diva Kristine W’s “Some Lovin” music video, which stars the QAF cast and crew. What more could you ask for? To their credit, the producers of this DVD—as well as previous QAF compilations—really do go all out to give fans devoted enough to shell out big bucks for DVD collections something special." (Showtime Entertainment)

Here's another review from DigitallyObsessed.com.

Denver Post TV/Radio Critic Joanne Ostrow writes about viewers collecting their favorite shows... "TV-themed DVD sales topped $1 billion in 2003, a gold mine for formerly overlooked assets that had been collecting dust in studio vaults. Nurturing the trend, the studios in 2003 doubled the number of TV titles released in 2002 ... The TV on DVD business is expected to grow substantially again this year. That's found money beyond the syndication market, a revenue stream that simply wasn't there before. The boom is not only a revelation for the industry. It marks a shift in consumer attitudes as well: The lowly television rerun has landed a place on the bookshelf. Buyers seem to favor DVDs of heavily serialized dramas. That is, a drama such as "24," with continuing characters and an intricate story line that demands episode-to-episode attention, sells well as a boxed set. Serialized adult soaps such as "Queer as Folk" are popular, too."

Peter PaigeIf you're interested in seeing Peter Paige on the TV show "Will & Grace" (he played Roger O'Neil in the episode "Whose Mom Is It, Anyway?" which originally aired on November 9th, 1999), then set your VCRs for February 27th, 11pm on the WB Network (check local listings for alternate airtimes).

Harris Allan posted on Hal's Lair in the Other Characters/Actors thread. He writes, "Hey guys... I want to say thank you for all of the birthday wishes and the praises I had an amazing birthday in Vancouver when I was there . I was on set for my actually birthday (February 11) filming and everyone sang Happy Birthday Hal had them arrange to have a cake so it was special and I'm very happy :)... Have a great time... Harris Allan. If you weren't already aware, there is a yahoo discussion group for Harris called "toast and bananas" and an official website is currently in the works for the young Mr. Allan.

Speaking of birthdays... today is Scott Lowell's birthday. Stop by the Birthday Wishes thread on his official website to check out the messages for him. Annie has announced that the 2004 Sco-Lo Convention is currently full, but registrations are still being accepted in case any spots open up.

Hal Sparks appeared on Mike Bullard the other night, playing "Satellites" with his band and chatting with Mike for a few minutes. Rocepta prepared a page of screen caps. He mentioned that the cast and crew are still filming season 4 of QAF, with about three episodes left as of last Thursday. It sounds like everyone is pleased with the work this year. The DVD signing tour begins soon (see calendar at left for details) and the Hal Sparks Band will be playing a few gigs as soon as Hal is finished shooting at the end of March, and then will do another tour in the Summer (starting around June, Hal said). Keep an eye on Hal's Lair for more information.

Andrea (Sandstorm) is hosting clips for the Season 4 promos, as well as the S3 Bloopers and S4 Sneak Peek from the S3 DVD box sets coming out next week (hard to keep these seasons straight! LOL). Anyway, check out her clips page for all the goodies. Thanks to Andrea, JenR and others who were involved in creating these and making them available online.

Hal Sparks was a guest on The Mike Bullard Show last night. The Hal Sparks band played a number, then Hal chatted with Mike for a few minutes about upcoming tours and his work on QAF. There are three episodes left to shoot before they wrap for the season, he said. He said it has been a really great season this year. More info is available at Hal's Lair.

From The Washington Blade today:
Variety reports that MTV is proceeding with plans to bring
OUTLET, a proposed digital cable channel, to your television set some time in the future. MTV had originally discussed the idea with Showtime to provide a gay subscription channel, much like HBO and Showtime — which are both pretty damn gay anyway — but those plans have been scrapped. MTV is trying to make Outlet an advertiser-supported digital cable channel, which likely means that shows as racy as "Queer As Folk" and "The L-Word" would have to be toned down to air on the network. The good news is that MTV could make deals with cable providers, insisting that they put Outlet on their dials if they want other MTV channels such as the all-music MTV2, VH1, and kid-friendly Nickelodeon. Still no word yet on when Outlet may start.

Hal has been swamped, Robert says, and will post about it soon, but in the meantime, he wanted fans to know that the Hal Sparks band will play a full set (perhaps their longest to date) at a cool club in the Toronto area that night (venue TBA). Robert has sent Hal a few audio files from some of their studio sessions in LA so Hal may try to get a demo of a few of their songs finished in time for the show on the 19th.

Sharon GlessFrom today's Variety.com: Sharon Gless winged into L.A. from Toronto, from season four of Showtime's "Queer as Folk," to femcee the USCripter Awards (see the December 3rd entry in the news archive for more information on this event). Gless is trying to get husband Barney Rosenzweig off Miami's Fisher Island beach to pitch Jane Juska's book "A Round-Heeled Woman" as a TV series (on January 29, it was reported that Sharon owns the TV, stage, and movie rights to the story and hopes to get it written and filmed).

Hal SparksRobert Hall, director of the film "Lightning Bug" (which features Hal Sparks) has asked supporters to sign a petition that will hopefully influence the decision-makers and eventually help obtain distribution for the film. Gearing up for the screening of "Wake" later this month (see calendar at left for details), there's a new clip available at the official site. The trailer features some intriguing glimpses of Gale as Kyle Riven.

If you haven't seen the QAF Season 4 promo (mentioned below), you can now download it at Sandstorm's site (thanks, Andrea, for making it available).

Hal Sparks has answered a new batch of questions in the latest Q&A at Hal's Lair. He talks about his background in martial arts, and how Eastern philosophy has shaped his life. Hal addresses some very specific questions about his character on QAF, regarding dialogue and interpretations of certain scenes; he also mentions a few upcoming projects and the big media blitz that has been talked about for the new season.

QAF Cast PromoPress Release from digitalpostproduction.com: Click 3x Helps Showtime’s "Queer as Folk" Come of Age...

Click 3x has produced a new 45-second promo marking the triumphant return of Showtime’s original series about gay relationships, Queer as Folk. Co-directed by Click 3x’ Iain Greenway and Peter Corbett, the promo kicks off the fourth season of the show, Showtime’s most popular prime-time original series, with the tagline "This spring the original comes of age."

The promo is designed to resonate with Queer as Folk fans by playing off the crowning event of the show’s last season: the electoral defeat of an anti-gay mayoral candidate. In the promo, the show’s cast—who worked for the candidate’s defeat—strides through the Babylon nightclub past cheering admirers. Echoing a scene from the season finale, the actors head out onto the street to celebrate and form a tableau as the show title appears.

The moody imagery is complimented by graphics that emerge out of the nightclub lighting. Together they convey a sense that a big event is about to unfold. "We wanted to communicate the sense of pride they have in their victory and show that they are truly enjoying this moment of glory," explained Greenway. "When they leave the club, they are entering a new space, one that symbolizes a coming of age for the cast members—and for the show itself. We are saying that with its fourth season, the show, too, has come of age."

Greenway and Corbett shot the spot in Toronto on the actual Babylon nightclub set used in the show. In addition to the show’s nine cast members, some 180 extras were employed as nightclub patrons for the shoot, which was accomplished in a single day, despite its more than two dozen set ups.

"We changed the lighting on the set, making it a monochromatic blue tone and supplemented that with the silver light from a mirror ball," Greenway recalled. "In addition, we dressed the extras in dark colors to create a special look and make the cast stand out." That look was further enhanced in post production with the application of a defocus effect that helped to make the cast look heroic.

Corbett and Greenway took time in pre-production to plan each shot and set up down to the smallest detail so that the production could be accomplished in just one day. The tight scheduling was necessary due as it was being squeezed in between shoot days for the show itself. "It was incumbent upon us to be as efficient as possible out of consideration to the show’s cast and crew," explained Corbett. "For them, this was an extra day of work."

"We were also very cognizant of the need to make the cast look great as they have a large vested interest in their characters and the show," he added. "In the end, it all went smoothly and we finished exactly on time."

Thea GillIn her Toronto Star column today, Rita Zekas balks at the idea of getting something like Janet Jackson's nipple piercing done to herself. She says, "I'm even too chicken for a Brazilian. When actor Angela Asher called up in a panic for the phone number of a salon that did Brazilian waxing -- she was portraying a limber character on Queer As Folk -- I couldn't help her out." (A Brazilian is a procedure where the entire pubic region is waxed, leaving only a small section 2-3 fingers wide, so one can comfortably wear revealing lingerie or swimwear). Angela played Marianne McDonald in Episode 113 -- the guest at the baby shower with whom Melanie had an affair. Asher is currently playing the role of cocaine-smuggling mom on This Is Wonderland and requires no waxing. "This is the roughest I've ever looked," she claims. "Like Charlize Theron as ugly girl in Monster." Zekas also mentions in "Side dish" that among the audience at the ArtWord production of Dear Boss last Tuesday night were Thea Gill, Nick Mancuso and Eric Peterson. The play is a chronicle of the Jack the Ripper Murders of 1888, performed by three actors and a rabble of multi-sized puppets. It is a fantastical murder mystery and a romantic horror story, written (and puppets) by Eric Woolfe, and performed at the Artword Theatre.

Happy Groundhog Day! Will this winter ever end?

Perhaps some good news will warm us all up... VH-1 is planning a one-hour special on QAF, featuring the entire cast, the producers, and a few directors as well. It's scheduled to air sometime in April. More details to follow.

February 22 is Scott Lowell's birthday. If you would like to post a birthday message for him, you can do so at the forum on his website.

I recently spoke with Stephanie Moore, who plays Cynthia (Brian's assistant), and she said that she has really enjoyed being back on QAF this season. Her part is a bit "meatier" now, and she's in nearly every episode (and yes, she realizes that she is the envy of many fans since she gets to act with Gale Harold on a daily basis!! LOL) On a personal note, she recently married a wonderful man who is her "prince". Last summer she filmed a prequel to the psi-fi movie CUBE, called CUBE ZERO, in which she plays Cassandra Rains, the lead female. More of her credits are listed at IMDb.com.

Bobby GantBobby Gant has quite a few appearances coming up, and a lot of magazine coverage as well... are you ready for this? On February 14th, he will be the featured speaker at the Human Rights Campaign Dinner in Denver, Colorado. The HRC is America's largest gay and lesbian organization, and provides a national voice on gay and lesbian issues. Bobby has been involved with this organization for some time. On April 2nd, he will be making an appearance in Pittsburgh at a large Dance Party Event (more on that soon). Also in April, Bobby Gant will be featured as the cover photo/article for OUT Magazine. Then on May 2nd, Bobby will be on the speaker's panel for Gay Aging/Elderly at the 2004 Equality Forum in Philadelphia. The Equality Forum is the world's largest gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender (GLBT) civil rights event, and each year they recognize one country that has shown leadership in response to GLBT related issues. It was announced on October 16, 2003 that Canada will be the Featured Nation in 2004. Canada was selected as it is one of the world's most progressive nations on GLBT human rights. But wait... there's more news! Bobby will appear in the June Issue of People En Espanol (the Spanish language edition of People magazine); he will also be featured in the June issue of Estylo Magazine (the bilingual magazine that features celebrities, beauty and fashion for Hispanics) in a fashion spread. Whew!! You can visit Bobby's official website "Be The Change" for more details on all of this information!

Bobby Gant and Randy Harrison
Robert Gant and Randy Harrison are featured in the number one spot in the cover article for the February issue of Advocate magazine: "Top 10 Celebrity Bachelors"...
"What kind of guy makes our top 10? For starters, he's got to be out -- and good-looking. Being rich and famous doesn't hurt. He's got to be single, of course. But since gays can't yet legally wed in the United States, how is 'single' defined? Two men under one roof (sharing one bed) are obviously off-limits. Ditto for a pair of guys going steady. But if they're casually dating (Robert Gant and Kyan Douglas rumors, anyone?), they're fair game. So here are our Top 10 Most Eligible Gay Bachelors -- at least until Valentine's Day."
Robert Gant, Randy Harrison (actors, Queer as Folk): "If you like the Great White North, one of these guys -- each of whom spends the better part of the year in Toronto shooting the landmark Showtime series -- might be the one for you. Sure, it'll be cold, but you can snuggle up...and even get legally hitched if things go well. Downside: Long work hours for him, plus all those QAF fan-addicts tearing at your flesh."

Hal Sparks will be shooting his commentary bits for "I Love the 90's" this month (second week of February). Apparently he's looking forward to dishing O.J. Simpson, Grunge, and the movie Titanic.

If you're one of those people like me who whose main interest in the Super Bowl is the half-time show and the commercials, LOL, keep an eye peeled for the "Know HIV/AIDS" campaign, sponsored by Viacom (Showtime's parent company) and the Kaiser Family Foundation, which will be launched during the pre-game show today.
