Every Nine Seconds
SimonSays.com is now advertising the first in a series of three novels from Publisher Pocket Books based on characters from Queer As Folk, which will be available in March 2003 (we first heard about these books in November. The novels will reportedly be followed by a companion book. The first one is called Every Nine Seconds: A Queer as Folk Novel by Joseph Brockton. You may remember some of the very first words uttered in episode 101 by narrator Michael Novotny: "They say men think about sex every 28 seconds. Of course, that's straight men. For gay men it's every nine." As described on the SimonSays site, the story takes place in 1989, on the eve of Brian's eighteenth birthday, a few weeks before the seductive soccer star is to leave for college. Michael is headed for community college while living at home with Debbie. But before their lives diverge, a hot new club will open, they'll go to the prom "stag" together, and family strife will turn their world upside down. The book is available at BarnesandNoble.com for $11.70 USD, and at Amazon.com for $11.20 USD.

Cast of Proof
Thea Gill won't be wasting any time when shooting wraps on QAF this Spring. The busy actress will be returning to Victoria, BC, where she currently resides with her husband during the off-season, to star in David Auburn's Pulitzer Prize winning play, "Proof" at the Belfry Theatre from April 8 to May 4, 2003. Thea's husband, Brian Richmond, is directing the play. The Belfry is an intimate theatre (280 seats) in an old Baptist church in the Victoria neighbourhood of Fernwood.

The story follows Catherine (played by Thea), an enigmatic woman, who has cared for her brilliant but unstable mathematician father (Nicholas Campbell of TV's Da Vinci's Inquest) for years. Her father's mysterious notebooks coupled with the arrival of her manipulative sister and an unexpected suitor are pieces of the puzzle in the search for the truth behind a groundbreaking mathematical proof.

The QAF demo reel for Dean Armstrong (ex-Blake), featuring clips of "Blake" from season one, has been added to the Media section on his Website. Click here to access the RM (Real Media) clip.

Site Update: The Appearances page has been updated with new information on the upcoming seasons.

Cagney and Lacey
The Los Angeles Daily News (dailynews.com) reports this week that Sharon Gless will reunite with her Cagney and Lacey co-star, Tyne Daly, for an upcoming episode of Judging Amy to air February 10 on CBS. Says Sharon, "I play Tyne's college roommate, who, like her, became a social worker and ended up as the boss of her boss. They've left the door open for the character to return." She also commented on the reduced number of episodes being offered on QAF this season. "As our salaries go up, the amount [sic] of episodes go down," she observes. "The first season we did 22, then 20, and next year, we'll be doing 13." She says Showtime has indicated their intention to going beyond its current four-season commitment. "We were told that they wanted us to do the show for a fifth year. We are Showtime's biggest hit," she says.

Enza AndersonEnza Supermodel
One of Toronto's best-known drag queens, Enza "Supermodel" Anderson (who recently vied for the leadership position of the notoriously right-wing Canadian Alliance party--formerly the Reform party) may be making an appearance on Queer As Folk this season. Her platform, besides six-inch pumps, includes affordable housing, better public transport and decriminalization of marijuana and prostitution. Rita Zekas of the Toronto Star wrote about the Polish Gay and Lesbian Association's 9th annual Polish Night fundraiser which took place at Woody's last Sunday. In attendance, reports Zekas, was the "ubiquitous Enza Supermodel, who has postponed filing her nomination papers for the office of city councillor because she got a gig on Queer As Folk" [Source: TheStar.com, January 19, 2003]. No word on what the role is, but it's probably safe to say that the diva's appearance will not go unnoticed.

Peter Paige
Thanks to xof for a heads up on this item:
Brian McNaught of Provincetown's WOMR 92.1 radio hosts a weekly program called "On Being Gay" which deals with gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender issues. Peter Paige participated in the interview session that took place on August 7, 2002. The topic was "No Apologies, No Regrets" and Peter spoke candidly about his life, his family, his career, his philosophy in general, and naturally, about the show, including the effect that Peter's role on QAF has had on the relationship with his family. The hour-long interview is available in streaming video on the Coming Out Website, and includes part of Peter's Provincetown speech (you will need either Windows Media Player or RealPlayer to listen):
www.brian-mcnaught.com/radio/

On a side note, the July 17th interview (listed just a few items below Peter's on the "Consider This" site) is called "Gay Pride In Jerusalem" and features a teleconversation with Jerry Levinson in Jerusalem, Chairperson of The Jerusalem Open House. This may be of particular interest to those who are interested in keeping Queer As Folk and other shows on the air in Jerusalem.

In an exclusive backstage interview last October with David Guarino of the Windy City Times, Peter Paige shared the scoop on his dizzying newfound fame, most embarrassing moment, being a spokesperson for the GLBT population, words of wisdom on the state of the GLBT community--and his commitment to it in his increasingly prominent role as an openly gay actor and activist. Peter says, "My new tag line is, 'They come for the Queer but they stay for the Folk.' "

Still more on Peter's activism: In celebration of National Coming Out Day 2001, NCOP-DFW hosted its annual event at the State Fair of Texas®, known as "Gay Day at the State Fair" with emcee Chris Jagger of The EDGE (KDGE 102.1FM) Morning Team. Peter Paige was the guest speaker at the event. To listen to audio clips of Peter's speech, and to see pictures of the event, visit the NCOD Celebration page.

Please note: Links to all of the interviews and audio clips will be available shortly on the Media Page.

Happy New Year
Happy New Year! After a short but much-needed repose, QAF Addiction is ready to go with a whole slew of teasers and tidbits for 2003, starting with a brand new essay on Gale Harold, which discusses the actor's career to date. Click here to read "The Artistry of his Craft."

The Appearances page has been updated to include the latest production information, as well as news regarding the DVD release.

ScottLowell.com has had a facelift! While Ted's youthful portrayer is in no need of collagen or Botox® injections, the site itself has been nipped, tucked and powder puffed... it offers some new features including the January Q&A, additional wallpapers and downloads, and an interest sign-up form for the first Sco-Lo Convention.

A little humour... On the January 1st episode of The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, QAF was mentioned in the monologue. Jay said, "The Air Force announced this week they are sending F-15 ground attack jets to the Persian Gulf from the Seymour Johnson Air Force Base in North Carolina. Exactly, Seymour Johnson? Isn't he one of the stars on that show Queer as Folk?"
