February 27, 2008 Here's a photo of Thea Gill with Sally Kirkland at the 2nd annual "Show Off Your Short" film festival held in Hollywood earlier this month, at which Thea presented Ms. Kirkland with the Lifetime Achievement Award (mentioned in a previous update). Here's another photo of Thea, this time with Michelle Clunie, at the AIDS Project Los Angeles (APLA) seventh annual Oscar Viewing Party in West Hollywood. Also in attendance were Jennifer Love Hewitt and Ross McCall, Ricki Lake, Jodi Lyn O'Keefe, and "Sordid Lives" writer/director Del Shores and star Jason Dottley. February 22, 2008 The first half of the two-part Grey's Anatomy show titled "Crash Into Me," which aired last Thanksgiving and featured Gale Harold, is re-airing on ABC, March 7th at 9PM ET. To coincide with the February 19th release of the Rhincoeros Eyes DVD in the U.S., there have been a few mentions online. AfterElton briefly reviews the quirky movie in brian's blog : "While there isn't anything gay about the film, I'm mentioning it here because it features an all-too-rare appearance by Queer As Folk's Gale Harold as a dancing gumshoe. Yes, I just said 'dancing gumshoe'. And he's light on his feet!" Although producer Mia Bays was nominated for the Carl Foreman Award for Special Achievement by a British Director, Writer or Producer in their First Feature Film (Scott Walker: 30 Century Man) at the British Academy Film Awards 2008, it was Matt Greenhalgh who took home the award for "Control". The original short film "thinking..." that features Randy Harrison, and was written and directed by Randy's Arts Bureau (tAB) cofounder Marci Adilman, was recently shot in upstate New York and should be completed by late Spring. The shooting took place at the Garrison Institute, a former Capuchin monastery located on the Hudson River north of New York City, in beautiful surroundings. Patrick J. Donnelly was Director of Photography and Dan O'Hare produced. Updates and stills should be available on the website soon. The 2nd annual "Show Off Your Short" film festival was held in Hollywood, California, February 15 to 17, 2008. Thea Gill presented Sally Kirkland with the Lifetime Achievement Award for her impressive career on the stage, on TV and on the silver screen. Rose Viggiano writes about the evening in her blog: "Another huge treat was when Thea Gill presented the award to Ms. Kirkland. Ms. Gill is probably best known for her 5 years as Lindsey Peterson on the Showtime mega hit Queer as Folk. Recently she changed her image quite a bit, appearing on Dante's Cove as the sexy new owner of the Dive Shop, Diana. A mysterious beauty, Diana is striking, commanding and powerful with something always up her sleeve. Seeing Ms. Gill in person you can certianly see the change. Outfitted in a tight black corset top with a puffed skirt and black heels, she stood out as pure Hollywood Glam. "Gill was a great reminder about taking risks. She has taken many in her career, always going for the unusual project or character. Now she is adjusting to the environment here in LA, officially having moved her residence from her home in Canada this past September. When heading somewhere new, whether it be a location or a job or a group of friends, it can be easy to want to go with the flow and sacrifice ourselves in order to 'fit in'. But this deprives us of being who the universe meant us to be, and fulfilling the path that we were set on. Gill is exemplifying this mind set and I look forward to watching her as she brings her newest surprise to us." [read the entire blog entry] February 15, 2008 Hollywood blogger "Mr. Nightlife" got to spend some time with a few of the Queer As Folk castmates at a recent performance of Scott Lowell's new play, Orson's Shadow, at the Pasadena Playhouse in California. Attending with Thea Gill on February 10th, he met Sharon Gless, Peter Paige, and Michelle Clunie. Backstage, they mingled with playwright Austin Pendleton (he wrote "Uncle Bob" starring Gale Harold and George Morfogen), the show's director Damaso Rodriquez, and the Orson's Shadow cast including Sharon Lawrence, Bruce McGill, and Charles Shaughnessy. [read more and view photos] Peter Paige (Emmett Honeycutt on QAF) will make a special appearance this coming Wednesday, February 20th, at BENT, the monthly Gay Film Series at the Drexel Gateway Theatre in Columbus, Ohio. Peter's film, Say Uncle, will be screened. There is a pre-movie social (cash bar) beginning at 5:30 p.m. in the theatre's Lava Lounge. The screening begins at 7:05 p.m. Admission is $6.50 with proceeds benefiting future BENT screenings. Meet Peter and learn about the making of Say Uncle. Scott Lowell (Ted Schmidtt on QAF) has a birthday on February 22nd, and in honour of the big day, he has a special message for his fans on his website. As you may know, Scott is an adoptee who reconnected with his birthparents. Scott wants to introduce fans to, and encourage their support for, the Evan B. Donaldson Adoption Institute, an organization working to make adoption (and foster care) better for everyone, based on research and best practices rather than myths or stereotypes. Randy Harrison returns to the Berkshire Theatre Festival in Stockbridge, Massachusetts this year for a production of Samuel Beckett's Waiting for Godot. The play will be directed by Anders Cato and will co-star David Adkins. Randy will be playing the part of Lucky, who delivers a soliloquy that begins relatively coherently but quickly dissolves into logorrhoea (verbosity). Godot will be presented at the Unicorn Theatre, July 29-August 23, 2008. Robert Gant (Ben Bruckner on QAF) will play Nate Spencer in a telefilm called Special Delivery, to be shot in Oahu, Hawaii this year and distributed by the Lifetime Movie Network. The movie stars Lisa Edelstein, who plays Dr. Lisa Cuddy on "House" and also appeared in Fathers & Sons with Gale Harold, as well as "Say Uncle" with Peter Paige. "Delivery" is described as a fast-paced movie with comedic elements, in the vein of "Midnight Run." There is no release date yet, but word has it that it may be as late as December. Legendary graphic designer Graham Wood has created a series of haunting, kaleidoscopic animated sequences (Boychild, Sleepwalkers Woman, The Electrician, and Jesse) for "Scott Walker: 30 Century Man" (of which Gale Harold was an associate producer). They will be on display in their entirety on Sunday, March 9 from 3-7 pm at ByDesign 08 at the Northwest Film Forum in Seattle. This special annual series explores the intersection of graphic design and moving image, and celebrates multidisciplinary artists who push at the boundaries to create new techniques, styles and forms. The event is FREE and takes place in the gallery showcase. Mexico and Turkey film fests have also added the SW30 documentary to their rosters. From February through April, the Ambulante traveling documentary festival brings docs to towns and cities all across Mexico. Producers Stephen Kijak and Mia Bays will attend the screenings during the closing of the festival in Oaxaca in April. Visit the festival’s website for further info on times and locations of screenings. !f Istanbul presents Life in Sound: First-hand perspectives and never-before-seen footage of celebrated groups Joy Division and Sigur Ros (featured on Queer As Folk), and an intimate look at the creative process courtesy of musical legends Philip Glass and Scott Walker. SW30 screens four times, February 22-28. Rosie O'Donnell, who played "Loretta Pye" opposite Sharon Gless in season 5 of QAF, posted a "Famous Friend Friday" blog about the divine Miss Gless on her blog. View it here at rosie.com. Speaking of Sharon (Debbie Novotny on QAF), she's getting heaps of humorous praise for her recent Nip/Tuck appearances. AfterEllen's reviewer writes, "When Gless first showed up on the show, I was thrilled. Her character, Colleen Rose, was sassy, smart and funny — just like I like Gless, and like I'm used to seeing her. But things soon took a turn for the criminally insane. We learned that Colleen wasn't really a talent agent; she was just trying to get close to Dr. Sean. And when an actual agent interfered, teddy-bear-collecting Colleen decided to stuff him. It was one of the most gruesome murder scenes — not to mention one of the trippiest — I've ever seen on TV." An E!Online reviewer writes, "Can we please get an Emmy nom this year for Colleen Rose, the menopausal talent agent with Chardonnay breath who sports ill-fitting ensembles from Chicos? The lady, formerly known as Cagney of Cagney & Lacey — and sometimes referred to as Sharon Gless — has pathetic and crazy down pat. On a series that prides itself on its parade of lunatics, Colleen Rose is the loose screw that stands out most this season. Her desperation simply shines through without Gless having to go over the top. Good work." January 23, 2008 The Deadwood episodes featuring Gale Harold ("Leviathan Smiles" and "Amateur Night") will air this Thursday, January 24 and Thursday, January 31, respectively, on the History Television channel. On February 19th, 2008, Rhinoceros Eyes will have its DVD release in the U.S. It will be available for purchase online at sites like Amazon.com. Fancast, developed by Comcast Interactive Media (CIM) is a website that allows visitors to watch entertainment content that is found across multiple platforms. Viewers have access to over 3,000 hours of streaming free, full-length content from various networks. You can now watch episodes of "Vanished" starring Gale Harold as Graham Kelton. It's confirmed: Randy Harrison will be performing in Shakespeare's Anthony and Cleopatra at The Duke Theater, from March 22 to May 2 this year. One of Randy's castmates is George Morfogen, who played opposite Gale Harold's charcter Josh in the two-man play "Uncle Bob." From Gaywired.com: Bump! became an international hit on DVD in December 2007 with the first two releases featuring Mexico and Great Britain. With 16 DVD titles set to be released in 2008, the gay community will take a complete trip around the world in just one year, learning about the culture, common tourist spots, gay history, food, prides, bars, and nightlife in every city. The series is complete with interviews and tours from well-known gays and lesbians from around the world like Graham Norton, lyricist Allan Rich, and Queer as Folk stars Sharon Gless and Jack Weatherall. From BBC Entertainment News: The British Academy of Film and Television Arts announced the nominees for its 2008 motion picture contest, and Mia Bays, one of the producers of Scott Walker: 30 Century Man is nominated for "special achievement by a British director, writer or producer in their first feature film." The winners will be announced at a ceremony at the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden, London, on February 10. January 9, 2008 Some of you may have noticed that the Showtime website is now accessible to Canadians. Even better, the Showcase network in Canada ("Televison Without Borders") has revamped their Queer as Folk site. It's not quite as elaborate as the one they had when QAF first aired, but what's exciting is that they have begun posting the original Canadian versions of Queer As Folk episodes on their Broadband network (the ones that say "Temple Street Productions Presents" instead of "Showtime Presents"). The first 7 episodes of Season 1 are available now with one additional episode to be added each week until all 56 episodes from Seasons 1-3 are posted. Time will tell whether Showcase has the rights to Seasons 4 and 5, or whether they will be posted. In Seasons 1-3, the program was billed as a "Showcase Original" at the beginning of each broadcast and this stopped when Season 4 premiered. After the first run of the series (which featured episodes 101 and 102 together as the U.S. pilot and episodes 101-103 as the Canadian pilot), the combined pilots were separated into individual episodes. Because episode 102 was too short when it was separated, it was extended for its re-airings in the fall/winter of 2001. After season 2 began, the extended episode 102 disappeared and has rarely been seen since. Because the Season 1 DVDs used the U.S. pilot, the extended episode 102 remained unavailable...until now. Since the episodes on the Showcase website are the Canadian versions, episode 102 is the extended version with extra scenes (note: on the site, the episode is erroneously labelled 101-102 like the U.S. pilot, but if you click the link for episode 101-102, you can then view the clips for 102). We can only hope that if Showcase is posting the Queer As Folk episodes on-line, and also broadcasting Season 5 of The L Word (which is being shown on the network at the same time), perhaps QAF will return to Showcase TV in the not-too-distant future. (Thanks very much to Drew, who has appeared on QAF and has been mentioned a few times here, for this item!) Later this month, Robert Gant will attend "Silence The Hate," a fundraising and educational event for the building of the Gay American Heroes Memorial Project. The event will take place on January 26, 2008 at the East/West Lounge, 8851 Santa Monica Blvd in West Hollywood, from 3pm to 7pm. Proceeds will be used to build the traveling educational memorial exhibition. For more information on this event, visit the Gay American Heroes website. January 2, 2008 From Theater Mania: In addition to performing Garland Wright's version of Christopher Marlowe's "Edward the Second" on stage, Randy Harrison and castmates Michael Cerveris, Jason Butler Harner, and Denis O'Hare will head the Red Bull Theater's "Revelation Readings" of Bertolt Brecht's version the play at 7pm on Monday, January 7 at Playwrights Horizons' Peter Jay Sharp Theater. The reading will be directed by Michael Sexton, and the cast will also include Matthew Rauch, Davis Hall, Derek Lucci, Daniel Stewart, and Hannah Cabell. For more information, visit The Red Bull Theater website, or call 212-279-4200. Tickets are $20 for adults $20, and $10 for students/industry. Looks like Sherry Miller's career has gone to pot! ;) The actress, who played Jennifer Taylor (Justin's mom) on QAF has a new show on Canadian television. On Tuesday, January 8th, CBC TV launches a 13-part comedy series based on Douglas Coupland's popular 2006 novel JPod. Set on Canada's west coast, JPod combines office comedy with corporate satire in a world where the global microprocessor runs at close to 100 times the speed it did when Generation X was launched. The characters are six aspects of Coupland's mind (led by David Kopp as Ethan, who narrates) working in a videogame design labyrinth that resembles the virtual reality of a video game itself. Says one reviewer, "the best part of the series takes place well outside the Neotronic cubicle pod with Ethan's self-entitled parents - marijuana botanist Carol, played by Queer as Folk's Sherry Miller, and aspiring actor/successful philanderer Jim, personified by [Alan] Thicke in a revelatory turn." View a picture of the Jarlewski family (Sherry Miller as Carol, David Kopp as Ethan and Alan Thicke as Jim). A warning from our friend, Abisel, of RobertGant.com and Gantastic America: Robert Gant does NOT maintain a personal page on the social networking site Facebook; if you see someone using his name or picture, they are an imposter. All official links and information about Robert can be found on his website. Next up for Robert is an appearance at the Garden State Equality 2008 Legends Dinner on March 15th at 6 p.m., along with Cynthia Nixon, Senator Teresa Ruiz, Congressman Rush Holt, and others. The event will be held at the Maplewood Country Club, located at 28 Baker Street in Maplewood, New Jersey. For more information and to purchase tickets, visit the Garden State Equality website.
January 2, 2008
Broadway World is reporting that the run of Garland Wright's adaptation of Christopher Marlowe's Edward the Second has been extended through January 27th (the play was originally set to close on January 13th). Randy Harrison plays Spencer Jr., who becomes Edward the Second's "favourite" after Piers Gaveston is assassinated. I generally don't post news that hasn't been confirmed by an official source, but this information seems fairly reliable: Randy told a fan who spoke with him after a recent performance of Edward the Second that he will be starting his next play very soon -- a production of Shakespeare's Anthony and Cleopatra at the Duke Theatre in NYC. Rehearsals start in February, and the play runs March 22 to May 2, 2008. |
