July 21, 2008 Here's a roundup of some Gale coverage from the Summer 2008 Television Critics Association Press Tour, as well as news on Randy Harrison, Sharon Gless and Del Shores: Gale Harold is joining the cast of Desperate Housewives as the new man in Susan's life. Creator Marc Cherry calls him "an interesting artsy guy who is very different from the previous man in her life and presents her with all sorts of new challenges, including that she's not sure she wants to be in a relationship." Gale's character is named Jackson, and he is far more into Susan than she is into him, "but then, over time, she softens a bit." Susan is with a new man but she's less desperate for love. "Susan was a person who was always like, 'Please love me.' Now for many reasons that will be revealed, she is probably a person who's more closed off to love and not so searching and needy," Hatcher said. Cherry said Hatcher had the idea for Susan's first scene after the opening credits in the season premiere, which will air Sept. 28. The new season will also reveal what became of Mike Delfino (James Denton). Gale says, "I've worked about four days and it's been very nice, a very easy transition to go from being a complete stranger to all these people to just going to work and doing the work. (Teri) has a very ready grasp of what she needs to bring to the scene, she's a very fluid actress and it's been great to work with her." Kristin on E! News talks to Teri Hatcher about the new season of DH and working with Gale in this video. Teri talks about her character, and says there are reasons that this 'new' Susan is more pulled together, more controlling, more confident -- at least on the exterior -- and really grounded but painful reasons for why she got there. Kristin asks about the 'steamy' scene Teri shot with Gale, and that he was rumored to have been in his underwear. Teri says "It was. I was not wearing much either." Kristin says, that's a nice 'get to know ya'. "It really was," Teri laughs. "Yeah, that's kind of how this business works. But it's good, it's great to have him, he's terific, and it's definitely going to be a new kind of storyline that we haven't seen." Check out the ABC Party videos for more with the cast. Greg Hernandez (insidesocial.com) talked to Gale at the ABC Party, and said that he's starting to see Gale in a different way, now that he's doing other things besides QAF. Gale replied, "That's kind of a baseline obstacle for an actor who comes from a place of obsurity then gets a big job and then they get associated with whatever that big job is. And when the job is really somewhat extreme then you worry. Everyone decides to get freaked out about typecasting at some point in their lives. But I really wasn't.... If I was never anything other than what I did on that show then maybe I would be typecast but I think I have the ability to consider the world at large and approach it." Gale is still in touch with his castmates, and wanted to congratulate Sharon Gless on her Emmy nomination for guest actress on Nip/Tuck (WHOO! Go Sharon!). Stacey Wilson shares a few of her "Emmy-category fantasies", including Best Supporting Piece of Eyewear, which she thinks should go to Sharon Gless: "If you saw Nip/Tuck last season then you know this once camp-tastic show officially jumped the shark once the docs moved to L.A. But the season was worth sitting through if only to behold the craziness that was Sharon Gless as the bespectacled wackadoo Colleen Rose. Donning enormous glasses from the Charles Nelson Riley collection of 1972, Gless's look was equal parts eccentric Upper-Easter, old-school fashionista, and Venice-Beach street person, and it was all thanks to that crazy eyewear. I hope when she wins for Best Guest Star in a Drama (just guessing here), Gless takes some time to thanks the genius wardrobe person who picked out those sweet lenses." Rosie O'Donnell ("Loretta Pye" on QAF), Ross Mathews (from The Tonight Show) and Sharon Gless ("Debbie" on QAF) share a few laughs in a video blog from Rosie's latest "R Family Vacations" cruise. As new videos are being added all the time, look for it under the heading "a week ago today". Del Shores, a writer and producer for several seasons of "Queer as Folk" is taking his hit play and movie to the small screen with "Sordid Lives: The Series". The theme is one that is emblematic of Shores’ work and his life: the same events are often both riotously funny and darkly tragic. [read more]. The Berkshire Theatre Festival is the recipient of a $10,000 "Access to Artistic Excellence" grant from the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) to support extended rehearsals for Samuel Beckett's Waiting for Godot, featuring Randy Harrison ("Justin" on QAF). Larry Murray writes, "I had the opportunity to meet with actor Randy Harrison this week and he was enthusiastic about the generous amount of rehearsal time, a rarity for Summer theater productions. Very few donors and grant givers recognize the importance of development time for a production. It is a difficult thing to find money for. During the interview, Harrison talked about Beckett, Godot and the Berkshires. This enlightening conversation with one of BTF's regular actors will appear shortly in Berkshire Fine Arts." Berkshire Theatre Festival Artistic Director Kate Maguire calls Waiting for Godot "arguably the greatest play ever written about humanity questioning the very nature of existence." She says, "The questions it asks, such as why we are here and who we are as human beings, are as relevant today as when the play premiered in Paris in 1953." July 15, 2008 The Summer 2008 Television Critics Association Press Tour, where programmers parade their biggest stars and executives in front of the media, is underway. Desperate Housewives (Disney-ABC TV Group) is on deck for this Thursday, July 17th at 5pm. The panelists include Felicity Huffman, Teri Hatcher, Eva Longoria Parker, Marcia Cross, Nicollette Sheridan, Dana Delany, and creator and executive producer Marc Cherry. In E!Online's "Watch with Kristin" column, some new secrets are revealed about the upcoming season, including Gale Harold as Susan's new love interest. Executive Producer Sabrina Wind says, "He just shot his first scene today and Marc [Cherry] said it went great. And it wasn't an easy scene to start with...it involved a little skin." Pfff. After five years on QAF, showing a little skin isn't exactly an unfamiliar thing for Mr. Harold! Kristin asks fans to comment, so let her know what you think! "Delighted by Gale Harold's hotness even though it might mean bad things for Susan and Mike?" she asks. "Post your hopes, fears and speculation about Desperate Housewives season five in the comments." Scott Lowell has updated his website with new recommendations ("What I'm Digging"), and a new Q&A for July, in which he answers several questions about QAF in his usual honest and humorous way. In an interview with Jeffrey Donovan about Burn Notice, TV Squad mentions that Sharon Gless said Donovan went to her for advice about how to be the star of your own show. Donovan replies, "Well, she's been around the world in so many different roles and so many different series, but mostly it was about Cagney & Lacey. How do you do this role, any role – a specific role like hers or mine -- for such a long time and not burn out? And she kept talking about how it was always everyone else. Her sage advice was about knowing that you're part of a team and just keep thinking that. Five guys go out there and play in the NBA -- Go Celtics! – and you're part of a team. You've got Bruce Campbell, Gabrielle Anwar, and Sharon Gless and then a little guy named Jeff Donovan. They all think it's my show, they keep telling me that, but I say, 'No, it's our show.' Because I can't play Michael the way I'm playing him, without their energy making me who I'm supposed to be." July 7, 2008 Gale Harold is mentioned in a promo for the upcoming season of Desperate Housewives at E! Online (scroll down and click on the "Sizzling Tube Scoop" video from July 2nd). As we've already learned, Gale plays Ken, a new love interest for Teri Hatcher's character, Susan. We're told that James Denton will still be making appearances on the show, as Mike and Susan will be sharing custody of their five-year-old chid (will Ken become a stepdad in the near future?). The promo also includes a brief clip of Gale. While promoting his latest project, a Canadian remake of Othello which aired on CBC last month, Carlo Rota ("Gardner Vance" on QAF) told the Toronto Star that the writers' strike caused him to drop out of the TV series 24. Rota, who also stars on CBC's hit comedy Little Mosque on the Prairie, was forced to choose between both shows, and he chose Little Mosque over 24 because the strike went on so long. Well, according to 24headquarters.com, Rota will be returning to the show after all, and the scheduling has been worked out. His character, Morris O'Brian, will sub for Chloe while she's out dealing with their son's emergency. Here's a quote from yet another interview with Sharon Gless about her series Burn Notice, from The TV Addict: "You know, there was a time in my career when I just swore... and I was working way past the age when I should have been playing moms, but I wasn't yet. And I said I didn't want to play moms. I didn't want to be 'the mother of...' But the first mom I ever played I think was Queer as Folk. How cool is that?! And so when this came up, I thought, 'No, being a mom is cool!' If she's well written, like Madeline is." [read the full interview] Cyndi Lauper, who guest starred in episode 510 of QAF, showed up on As The World Turns last week for another show of support for the gay community. The pop star, who is promoting her new CD "Bring Ya to the Brink" made an appearance in Oakdale, Illinois to help boyfriends Luke and Noah (played by Van Hansis and Jake Silbermann) find their way back to each other. Fortunately, the bar where she performed didn't explode during the concert like Babylon did on QAF. Gay rights is a cause that Lauper has long supported. "Part of it is being raised a New Yorker, Italian," she tells Entertainment Weekly. "You're always taught from when you're little that you stick up for your own," she says, in reference to her older sister, Ellen, and her friends in the community. That's why she created the True Colors Tour in 2007. "It's always dangerous in any country when you say, 'We have this, except for you guys. Not you guys.' Because you never know when you're going to be piled into that group that doesn't have freedom or whatever life affords everybody else. [The tour] is an opportunity to step forward. I wanted to do it though the power of music and laughter and have information at people's fingertips." That's why, in addition to the family and friends grassroots organization PFLAG, Lauper also invited the Human Rights Campaign along on this year's tour, to help concertgoers register to vote.
