We gave What Lies Beneath...

Rob says:
Hello Berlinda.
Berlinda says:
Hello Robbie.
Rob says:
What are we here to review on this gorgeous winter day?
Berlinda says:
We are here to review What Lies Beneath, a thriller starring Michelle Pfeifer and Harrison Ford.
Rob says:
Yes, a fine film from the action-comedy genre...
Berlinda says:
No no, thriller, this movie is pretty scary.
Rob says:
Oh yes, that's right. Tee hee, musta been thinking about something else.
Berlinda says:
Yeah. Anyways, this movie is pretty darn scary. Even though I know what is going to happen, I still cover my eyes with a blanket out of fear, and last night when I watched it I even did a yelp/scream/jump combo. It was pretty embarassing.
Rob says:
Perhaps, but I definately gave you a 10 on style points. This movie follows a Claire(Pfiefer) and Norman(Ford) as some strange paranormal things start to happen in their house, and when Claire is the only one seeing these things happen, she becomes very scared whilst her husband thinks she is starting to lose it. As this story unfolds we find ourselves tangled in a web of deception, murder, and of course, things unnatural to us all, ghosts.
Berlinda says:
Yes, but let's be careful not to give anything away to anyone who has not seen this movie yet.
Rob says:
I'll show you careful (shaking fist).
Berlinda says:
Anyways, would you like to being the discussion on the sound, etc?
Rob says:
One of these days Berlinda, one of these days... Bang Zoom, Straight to the Moon!
The sound, definately one of the better ones we have seen lately, if you have been keeping current with our reviews, the last three or so movies, while not horrible, the were not all that they could be. So, thankfully, we have this one to come in and break the silence as it were and shed all kinds of nice sounds to the rear speakers and to the left and right as well. We had thunder booming in all around us and phones ringing to the left of us and great separation on the music as well, and watch out for that sound, cause you know they try to get you when something pops up on the screen by making a big loud sound, and even if you know it is coming, that dts track will get ya all the time. One of the best scenes in the movie is actually on of the best I have heard in a while. This scene takes place and the camera transitions from out of the water to under the water. Now anyone who has been under water should remember what it sounds like, it gets all quite, you can feel and here the water all around you, and the sounds are so static as they zip across the water to your ears like when you clack two rocks together and hear it so different as when you are out of the water, boy o boy they did a fantastic job of making you feel like you are underwater and then when you come out, and can hear everything clearly again, simply a great scene. On the video side, the picture is just great, we are getting a great transfer here, all the blacks come in nice and sharp, no dirt or dusting, the mist and fog looks very nice you can see the mist particles in it, boy I love dvd. Sometimes when you have a scene underwater, it comes out kind of muggy and not too crisp, these guys hit this one fine as well, we can see everything going on nice and clear. Just a great video transfer.
Berlinda says:
And a good video transfer is good for a movie that makes good use of colors, bright whites and scary blacks. The video and the sound complemented the movie greatly.
Rob says:
So how about the extras Berlinda? What did you think?
Berlinda says:
There is a directors commentary which I recommend, it describes a lot of the symbolism in the movie, and I love symbolism. There is also a featurette. Not much for the extras, but they are good anyway.
Rob says:
So, personally, I think it's time to rate this puppy! For the movie itself, I am going to give it a 4 star rating, it is really good to see more of an "old fashioned" thriller (with a supernatural twist) than what we get today with the Screams and Who Cares What I Did Last Summer and the other teen steam thrill/sex fests that they have. Its good to see two very accomplished actors give us a thriller. For the sound as you can imagine, I am gonna have to give a good rating, watch out everybody... we are about to pick it up a notch? 4.5 star rating! On to the video, we are gonna lay down a 4.25 and the extras are gonna get a 3.5. So that brings us to a grand total of... 4.25 stars. It's a winner folks, everyone loves a scare now and again, give this bad boy a test drive and you might like what you get... What do you think about it girly?
Berlinda says:
Well, first of all I would like to tell the people to give this movie a chance...don't listen to the critics. It's nice not to have teenagers slashing each others throats wearing weird masks. This is definitly a classy thriller and reminds me of an old-fashioned story, maybe Alfred Hitchcock if I knew more about his movies. Ok, I give the video a spooky 4.25, the sound a frightening 4.25, the extras a ghoulish 3.25, it's above average even though there is not much too it. And for the movie, I give it a horrifying 4.5. Sure, the ending is a little dragged out, but who wanted the movie to end in the first place? Not me. All in all a fun romp in a ghost infested forest, so I give it a terrifying 4.25
Rob says:
"Silly Blair Witch, you're not a good movie", I don't know about you, but that damn rabbit better get the cereal before I die.
Berlinda says:
Yes, we are all waiting for that day. So, just to recap, What Lies Beneath that commercial is a terrible form of prejudice that little children grow up on thinking its ok. No really, it's a good movie, go get it. BOO!!
Rob says:
Ahhhhhhhh!!!!!!!! Damn, don't scare me like that girl.
Berlinda says:
Sorry. Ok people, in the words of Michael Jackson, "This is Thriller, a hee hee." Have a good night!!
Rob says:
And for me, in the immortal words of Enrique Iglesias, "BAILAMOS!" Good Night everyone!
