Welcome to Strawhenge
This web site has been developed to document all "progress" on our land at Cochiti Mesa in the Jemez Mountains of Northern New Mexico..
The ultimate goal is to build a Straw-Bale cabin - hence the name "Strawhenge".

What is Strawhenge?
We bought some land (2 acres) on Cochiti Mesa, nr. Jemez Springs, New Mexico in July 1999. Our little patch of land is a beautiful forested area, somewhat "off the beaten path" close to the end of a dead-end forest road, but surrounded by a few other pieces of private property and National Forest. It is also a stone's throw from fantastic Pines canyon (see photo - and click it for larger view). Trees in the area include aspens, Douglas firs, ponderosa pines, and blue spruce. Elk, deer, mountain lions, bears, and coyotes have been seen by us in the surrounding area.
What's in a name?
Well perhaps needless to say (?) Strawhenge is the name of our cabin to be. After much amusing discussion, the name Strawhenge was chosen, but we had a long list of suggestions to go through. Here's just a few to ponder over!
Moose Hoose, Elk Bank, Dunbalin, In Dulce Domum, Villa Caffrey, Caffrey's Castle, Pooch End, Evergreen Lodge, Long Trek, Casa Verde, Los Pinos, Pinos Verde, Casa Caffrey, Los Caffreys, Pine Needles, Cochiti Cottage, Casa Cochiti, Caffrey's Cut, Caffrey's Cadenza, Con Brio, Caffrey's Canyon, Muchas Arbros, Forest Roost, The Hutch, The Bales, Pine Perch, Edge Wood, Aspects, Caffrey's Kennel, Straw Palace, Villa Straw, straw Nest, Jo's Bunker, wood Slope (and believe it or not, the list goes on...)
We hope you enjoy this site, and will keep checking back periodically to check our progress. Oh, and don't forget it's not too late to sign up for the great barn raising, just write to strawhenge@caffreys.net to get your name on the list!!!
